Excerpt from Woven of Many Threads F or months Constance was inconsolable, scarcely eating or sleeping, wandering from her sister's grave to her chamber, weeping with her head upon the pillow where she had so Often rested, or pressing her tear stained face almost frantically to the green sod that covered the last. Resting-place of the beloved dead. If it had not been for her brother, who, fearing grief would kill the child, left his studies at Oxford and devoted himself to her, she surely must have succumbed to her deep sorrow. As he tried every means to divert her, she gradually became more cheerful, but never again the light-hearted, happy child she had been before. Two years after, that idolized brother, in all the strength and glory Of youth, was brought from Oxford to his childhood's home, hopelessly insane. Over-study in preparing to graduate had affected a ner vous excitable temperament, and an already overtasked brain, so as to extinguish for ever the light Of reason. For six months he lingered in that terrible darkness, some times gentle and tractable as a child, or again raving in the strongest and wildest delirium. Excerpt from Treatise on the Designing and Construction of Woven Fabrics The designing paper mostly in use is laid off in squares con taining 8 x 8, or 64 blocks. The sizes of the blocks and squares vary according to the different sizes preferred by each designer and according to the kind of fabrics to be designed. The point paper, designated by 8 x 8, is usually made with squares of 1 in size, and larger. If a design is to be made which requires a large number Of threads the designing paper with the smaller squares is to be preferred; if, on the other hand, designs are to be made which require but a small number of threads, the paper with the larger squares is preferable. The number of blocks to the square warpwise is always indicated first. Other designing papers used are 8 x 6, 8 x 7, 8 x 9, 8 x 10, 8 x x 16, 4 x 12, 6 x 12, 10 x 10, 12 x x 12, etc., etc. The heavy lines, or squares, serve as a unit for measure ment, as well as in helping to count Off the required number of blocks. In this way they help to find the size of auv design on point paper, at a glance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Gayworthys: A Story of Threads and Thrums OF threads and thrums: because a simple story of this mixed divine and human weaving we call Life; wherein are threads, - lines lying evenly along the loom, and made secure and perfect with a filling; wherein are also many thrums, - ends broken, or dropped midway, on reaching out unfinished lengths beyond the web. Wherein the fabric seems, so often, faulty; where much seems lost, left out, or wrongly joined; where correspondence is delayed, and full matched beauty missed; where colors are confused; where the pattern, being vast, may never quite unroll to earthly vision; where Patience keeps her foot upon the treadle, and Faith must stand, with fervent eyes, beside the springing shuttle, knowing Of breadths that shall be woven by and by! If you believe there are no coincidences in life and we are on a destined path, then this book will attest to that perception. The story of Luz is where this journey begins. It is a powerful example of strength, of will to push through one’s fears, and of raw determination to survive. The lessons and examples of having the courage not only to survive but to ultimately thrive through some of life’s hardships eventually became the threads of knowledge that were passed on to Marianna. Marianna enters her life’s story only to be abandoned by her mother at the age of three months, her mother who was too young and unwilling to do “what it takes” to care for the children she brought into the world. Whether by “destiny” or by “coincidence,” this child is left with Luz, who had also survived her own tragedy of being left and abandoned after her parents had been killed. Luz would become a grounding force and guiding light in Marianna’s life. Marianna spends a lifetime behind the facade of pretending, showing people she was happy and willing to do most anything to show the world how well-adjusted she was. Marianna’s journey to discover she was accepted and good enough unfolds in a way that she is able to gain insight into life—her life—thus passing along her own threads of knowledge to her children and generations to come for more of the tapestry to be woven.

Excerpt from The Thread of Gold I Sate to-day, in a pleasant hour, at a place called The Seven Springs, high up in a green valley of the Cotswold hills. Close beside the road, seven clear rills ripple out into a small pool, and the air is musical with the sound of running water. Above me, in a little thicket, a full-fed thrush sent out one long-drawn cadence after another, in the joy of his heart, while the lengthening shadows of bush and tree crept softly over the pale sward of the old pasture-lands, in the westering light of the calm afternoon. These springs are the highest head-waters of the Thames, and that fact is stated in a somewhat stilted Latin hexameter carved on a stone of the wall beside the pool. The so-called Thames-head is in a meadow down below Cirencester, where a deliberate engine pumps up, from a hidden well, thousands of gallons a day of the purest water, which begins the service of man at once by helping to swell the scanty flow of the Thames and Severn Canal. But The Seven Springs are the highest hill-fount of Father Thames for all that, streaming as they do from the eastward ridge of the great oolite crest of the downs that overhang Cheltenham.
