By bringing queer theory to bear on ideas of diaspora, Gayatri Gopinath produces both a more compelling queer theory and a more nuanced understanding of diaspora. Focusing on queer female diasporic subjectivity, Gopinath develops a theory of diaspora apart from the logic of blood, authenticity, and patrilineal descent that she argues invariably forms the core of conventional formulations. She examines South Asian diasporic literature, film, and music in order to suggest alternative ways of conceptualizing community and collectivity across disparate geographic locations. Her agile readings challenge nationalist ideologies by bringing to light that which has been rendered illegible or impossible within diaspora: the impure, inauthentic, and nonreproductive. Gopinath juxtaposes diverse texts to indicate the range of oppositional practices, subjectivities, and visions of collectivity that fall outside not only mainstream narratives of diaspora, colonialism, and nationalism but also most projects of liberal feminism and gay and lesbian politics and theory. She considers British Asian music of the 1990s alongside alternative media and cultural practices. Among the fictional works she discusses are V. S. Naipaul’s classic novel A House for Mr. Biswas, Ismat Chughtai’s short story “The Quilt,” Monica Ali’s Brick Lane, Shyam Selvadurai’s Funny Boy, and Shani Mootoo’s Cereus Blooms at Night. Analyzing films including Deepa Mehta’s controversial Fire and Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding, she pays particular attention to how South Asian diasporic feminist filmmakers have reworked Bollywood’s strategies of queer representation and to what is lost or gained in this process of translation. Gopinath’s readings are dazzling, and her theoretical framework transformative and far-reaching.

Movement caught her eye, and Rebecca looked up into the rearview mirror, the smile fading from her face. 'Easy, Vicky. Hold on!' Rebecca screamed just as she felt a jolt from behind. The black truck rammed them, and the icy road kept Rebecca from being able to turn the wheel. Now they were perched, parallel with the creek and the pavement, both left tires hanging dangerously over the edge of the embankment. They thought their troubles were over, but it was only the beginning. Thanks to Sheriff Tom Ackerman, the man they thought was responsible for terrorizing Rebecca Ackerman's father and brother over a plot of land is in jail. But before the investigation can even begin, the key witness is beaten up and left for dead. Apparently someone is still after the gold Rebecca's father found on his property in Six Mile Canyon. But who? Terror in Six Mile Canyon is Patricia Redican's second book in a two-part series set in Virginia City, Nevada, following Rebecca and her friend Vicky. Who is after them? And why is Vicky's new housemate, Amy, acting so suspicious? When Vicky and Rebecca go missing, it's up to Tom and Steven to find them before it's too late! Along the way, they will encounter ghostly miners and a one hundred-year-old ghost named Lorelei, who will also play a part in bringing the villains to justice. There's excitement waiting around every turn in Terror In Six Mile Canyon!

The transgressive writing of Georges Bataille (1897-1962) and the rigorous ethical philosophy of social activist and Christian mystic Simone Weil (1909-1943) seem to belong to different worlds. Yet in the political ferment of 1930s Paris, Bataille and Weil were intellectual adversaries who exerted a powerful fascination on each other. Saints of the Impossible provides the first in-depth comparison of Bataille's and Weil's thought, showing how an exploration of their relationship reveals new facets of the achievements of two of the twentieth century's leading intellectual figures and raises far-reaching questions about literary practice, politics, and religion. Traveling to California with Darcy so he can prove his innocence isn’t something he has time for, but at least he’ll get the chance to use his tactical training. And somehow he has to ignore the heated desire between them. But when Darcy’s almost killed helping Reeves, he has to face the truth of his feelings. With time running out, the hacker is one step ahead of them—and has them both in his sights. Can they uncover his identity before it’s too late?
