Excerpt from Water-Gas Apparatus and the Use of Central District Coal as Generator Fuel By reason of the greatly increased cost of the gas oil used to enrich water gas, and the higher costs of coal and labor, many gas compa nies, especially those having franchises that call for the delivery of gas of a certain quality at a certain price per thousand feet, are having financial difficulties. Reconstruction of plants to manu facture coal gas instead of water gas is difficult if not economically impossible under present conditions. The situation calls for the use of practicable economies and methods. One of these economies is the use of cheaper grades of coal to replace anthracite or coke. In the course of its investigations for increasing efficiency in the use of fuel the Bureau of Mines has given attention to various problems bearing on the manufacture of water gas. This paper presents cer tain preliminary studies made while considering the possibility. Of substituting Indiana and Illinois coal for coke in water-gas generator sets.
