Wodehouse. But in many respects, this golden age proved to be no more than an Indian summer. The loss of the men folk during the Second World War, coupled with the crippling death duties and the increasing difficulties in attracting servants, pointed towards a bleak future for many families. Land and contents were sold off and the houses, were now unwanted, often abandoned to decay. Of those houses that managed to survive the ravages of the First World War, many faced devastation in the Second: Requisitioned for the duration by the armed forces, numerous houses were returned to their owners beyond repair, falling prey to architectural salvagers and demolition. While a few houses have survived unscathed and others have been sympathetically restored, many are either decaying or have vanished forever.
