The Norwegian coastal current originates primarily from the freshwater outflow from the Baltic and the freshwater runoff from Norway. It flows northwards along the coast of Norway as a low-salinity current. This coastal region is the spawning ground for a number of important oceanic fish stocks, and the physical environment has an impact on the recruitment, growth, and geographical distribution of these stocks. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Institute of Marine Research in Norway established a coastal oceanographic observation system. This continued to evolve, and its core elements are still in operation. Drawing on the results generated by this observation system, as well as by other coastal studies, this book reviews the current understanding of the physical/chemical conditions in the Norwegian coastal current in such a way as to make the material more easily accessible to non-specialists. A series of chapters introduces readers to the geography, currents, water masses, and the temporal and spatial variability of the Norwegian coastal current. Interannual fluctuations in physical conditions are most likely to be the prime cause of ecosystem variability. The editor hopes that this book will act as a point of departure for a future summary of the ecology of Norwegian coastal waters.

" ... as soon as one has traversed the greater part of the wild sea, one comes upon such a huge quantity of ice that nowhere in the whole world has the like been known." "This ice is of a wonderful nature. It lies at times quite still, as one would expect, with openings or large fjords in it; but sometimes its movement is so strong and rapid as to equal that of a ship running before the wind, and it drifts against the wind as often as with it." Kongespeilet - 1250 A.D. ("The Mirror of Kings") Modern societies require increasing amounts influence on the water mass and on the resulting of scientific information about the environment total environment of the region; therefore, cer tain of its characteristics will necessarily be in whieh they live and work. For the seas this information must describe the air above the sea, included.

We are only now beginning to understand the climatic impact of the remarkable events that are now occurring in subarctic waters. Researchers, however, have yet to agree upon a predictive model that links change in our northern seas to climate. This volume brings together the body of evidence needed to develop climate models that quantify the ocean exchanges through subarctic seas, measure their variability, and gauge their impact on climate.

"Variability of Coastal Current" is a comprehensive book written by D Soum, which provides an in-depth analysis of the coastal current and its variability. The book covers various aspects of oceanography, including the continental slope and shelf, thermocline, and water masses. The author examines the influence of monsoon winds on the coastal currents, eddies, upwelling, and water properties such as temperature and salinity. The book explores the dynamics of the coastal current and its circulation within the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean. The author describes the physical processes, mesoscale and submesoscale features, and the impact of coastal upwelling, cyclonic, and anticyclonic eddies on the current. The book also discusses the use of remote sensing and satellite observations in studying the variability of the current and the seasonal changes. The author highlights the importance of understanding the variability of the Bay of Bengal coastal current in the coastal zone and its impact on sea level, winds, currents, and tides. The book also draws comparisons with other eastern boundary currents such as the Benguela Current, Brazil Current, California Current, Canary Current, Somali Current, Leeuwin Current, and Agulhas Current. Overall, "Variability of Coastal Current" provides a comprehensive overview of the variability of the Bay of Bengal coastal current and its significance in oceanography. The book is an excellent resource for researchers, students, and professionals interested in coastal oceanography and the dynamics of eastern boundary currents.
