This thesis analyzes the different value drivers of mines and mining companies in the base metal industry. The goal is to provide a solid understanding of a variety of aspects that need to be included during the valuation of a base metal mine. Therefore a market segmentation of the industry is delivered. In a second step the most critical factors were identified and qualified. The thesis also dives into various aspects of political and economic risks during a due diligence and the respective risk analysis. Further the available financial valuation models are shown and to some degree applied. To gain additional expertise the performance drivers of listed mining firms were analyzed by performing a regression analysis. Based on these set of insights it can be concluded that the main risks in mining valuations are not driven by insufficient financial modeling technics but rather by a low sophistication degree of transforming country risk, market exposure and engineering implications into quantifiable values.
