First published in 1993. In both general aviation and airline transport there is evidence of an emergent awareness of the importance of instruction in training. The demands of technological change, growing need for pilots at a time when the pool of experienced applicants is diminishing, and growing recognition of the importance of Human Factors to aviation safety, are straining the ability to cope. There is a growing recognition by management, of the contribution of ground and airborne instruction to the efficient operation of aviation in a variety of contexts. This book shows how professionals in the aviation industry and academic researchers complement each other in their pursuit of more effective and efficient flight training and instruction. Theory and practice each have a contribution to make. The contributions are thus drawn from regulatory authorities, airlines, universities, colleges, flying schools, the armed services and private practice. Such a mix brings differences in approach, style and argument showing both the variety and common aims in the emerging profession of flight instruction.

Critical incident stress management (CISM) is now a well-established method in crisis intervention, and one that is clearly needed within aviation. However, there are many peculiarities in this branch of CISM which require thorough consideration. People working in high-reliability environments need to be sensitive to others' reactions to critical stress. They are the normal reactions of normal people in abnormal situations. However, to ensure this a proper programme must be put in place, based on a scientific and standardized approach. This book describes the various methods and elements of the CISM model, as well as their interventions. It also investigates the benefits of CISM on the individual level and on an organisational strategic level. It details CISM training and courses, and features a case study based on the Überlingen accident of 2002. Critical Incident Stress Management in Aviation will be of direct relevance to human factors experts, safety managers, ATCOs and air navigation service providers, though there is also much that will be of interest to aviation physicians, psychologists and airport/airline managers.

"Each year highway traffic incidents, such as crashes, place responders on and beside roadways with dangerous high-speed traffic. The unexpected conditions of an incident scene have the potential to surprise unsuspecting or inattentive drivers, possibly causing an additional crash, termed a secondary incident. Because responder safety is a key priority of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois Center for Transportation, and because secondary incidents are frequently more severe than the initial incident, ICT researches, guided by a technical review panel (TRP) of members from multiple incident response agencies, studied ways to improve responder safety in Illinois through a training program. A survey of incident response agencies throughout Illinois was conducted to assess the current level and type of incident management training provided to each group of responders. The research team reviewed the current training materials at federal, state, regional, and organizational levels. Based on the statewide survey, comprehensive literature reviews, and inputs from the TRP members, a training program was developed. The training intends to provide the necessary inter-disciplinary knowledge to incident responders in Illinois. The main objective of the training is to keep responders safe, prevent secondary incidents, and reduce fatalities in Illinois, while reducing non-recurring congestion caused by the incidents. The training includes approximately 6.5 hours classroom time and is divided into eight modules, each providing valuable training to incident responders. The training program was pilot tested in two regions of Illinois prior to finalization. The pilot training sessions received very positive feedback from over 50 participants."--T.p. verso.

Is emergency management education undoing an age-old tradition in the American Fire Service? Has the time arrived to educate emergency managers in college classrooms rather than in twenty years of tactical operations experience? Over one hundred forty-three (143) institutions of higher education are now offering certificate or degree programs in emergency management with no tactical operations experience required for admission. Resistance by veteran law enforcement officers and fire fighters may have to be overcome if we are to prepare emergency managers with required skill sets. Dr. Tom Phelan explores the skills being taught to emergency management students and addresses the concerns of experienced first responders in accepting their leadership. *Discusses the value of emergency management education in the post-9/11 world*Makes clear the need for educating emergency managers to prepare them for emergency manager leadership*Helps bridge the gap between emergency management and first responders*Should be required reading in every college emergency management curriculum*The book is clear, concise, and an "easy read"
