Excerpt from The Works of John Locke, Vol. 6 The ensuing Letter concerning Toleration, first printed in Latin this very year, in Holland, has already been translated both into Dutch and French. So general and speedy an approbation may therefore bespeak its favourable reception in England. I think indeed there is no nation under heaven, in which so much has already been said upon that subject as ours. But yet certainly there is no people that stand in more need of having something further both said and done amongst them, in this point, than we do. Our government has not only been partial in matters of religion, but those also who have suffered under that partiality, and have therefore endeavoured by their writings to vindicate their own rights and liberties, have for the most part done it upon narrow principles, suited only to the interests of their own sects. This narrowness of spirit on all sides has undoubtedly been the principal occasion of our miseries and confusions. But whatever have been the occasions, it is now high time to seek for a thorough cure. We have need of more generous remedies than what have yet been made use of in our distemper. I have so little varied any thing, but only the order of what was sent you at different times, and on several occasions, that the reader will easily find, in the familiarity and fashion of the style, that they were ra ther the private conversation of two friends, than a dis course designed for public view. Excerpt from The Works of John Locke, Vol. 6 of 9 This is fo clear in thefe cited places, and fo much the current of the New Tel'tament, that nobody can deny, but that the doetrine of the gofpel is, that death came on all men by Adam's fin; only they differ about the fignificatiop of the word death. For fome will have it to be a {late of guilt, wheiein not only he, but all his poflerity was fo involved, that every one defcended of him deferved endlefs torment, in hell-fire. I {ballvfay nothing more here, how far, in the apprehenfions of men, this confii'ts with the jufiice and goodnefs of God, having mentioned it above: but it feems a firange way of underfiandinga law, which requires the plaineft and direetefi words, that by death {hould be meant eternal life in mifery. Could any one be fuppofed, by a law, that fays, For felony thou fhalt die, not that he fhould lofe his life; but be kept alive in perpetual, exquifite torments? And would any one think himfelf fairly dealt with, that was fo ufed? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Works of John Locke, Vol. 8 of 10 I did not, when I reflected on it, very much wonder that this part of sacred Scripture had difficulties in it many causes of obscurity did readily occur to me. The nature of epistolary writings in general disposes the writer to pass by the mentioning of many things, as well known to him to whom his letter is addressed, which are necessary to be laid open to a stranger, to make him comprehend what is said and it not seldom falls out that a well-penned letter, which is very easy and intelligible to the receiver, is very obscure to a stranger, who hardly knows what to make of it. The matters that St. Paul writ about were certainly things well known to those he writ to, and which they had some peculiar concern in; which made them easily apprehend his meaning, and see the tendency and force of his discourse. But we having now, at this distance, no information of the occasion of his writing, little or no knowledge of the temper and circumstances those he writ to were in, but what is to be gathered out of the epistles themselves; it is not strange that many things in them lie concealed to us, which, no doubt, they who were concerned in the letter understood at first sight. Add to this, that in many places it is manifest he answers letters sent, and questions proposed to him, which, if we had, would much better clear those passages that relate to them than all the learned notes of cuties and commentators, who in after-times fill us with their conjectures; for very often, as to the matter in hand, they are nothing else.
