Now, what I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life. Plant nothing else, and root out everything else.' Coketown is dominated by the figure of Mr Thomas Gradgrind, school owner and model of Utilitarian success. Feeding both his pupils and his family with facts, he bans fancy and wonder from young minds. As a consequence his young daughter Louisa marries the loveless businessman and "bully of humility" Mr Bounderby, and his son Tom rebels to become embroiled in gambling and robbery. And, as their fortunes cross with those of free-spirited circus girl Sissy Jupe and victimized weaver Stephen Blackpool, Gradgrind is eventually forced to recognize the value of the human heart in an age of materialism and machinery.

This title Hard Times is unusual in several ways. It is by far the shortest of Dickens's novels, just a quarter of those written immediately before and after. Also, unlike all but one of his other novels, this Hard Times title has illustrations that will help the reader get into this story. In addition, it is the only novel by him that does not have scenes set in London. Instead, the story is set in the fictional Victorian industrial town of Coketown, a generic industrial city in northern England, similar in some ways to Manchester, albeit smaller. Coketown may be partially based on 19th century Preston. Book I: SOWING Superintendent Mr. Gradgrind opens the novel at his school in Coketown saying, "Now, what I want is facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but facts," and interrogates one of his students, Cecilia (nicknamed Sissy), whose father works in a circus. Because his father works with horses, Gradgrind demands the definition of a horse. Book 2: REAPING Book Two opens on Bounderby's bench in Coketown, over which the "light janitor", Sissy's former classmate Bitzer, and the austere Mrs. Sparsit keep watch for the afternoon. A well-dressed gentleman asks how to get to Bounderby's house, as Gradgrind has sent him from London with a letter of introduction. Book 3: GARNERING At Bounderby's London hotel, Mrs. Sparsit breaks the news that she has brought him surveillance of her. Bounderby takes her back to Coketown and Stone Lodge, where Louisa is resting. Gradgrind tells Bounderby that Louisa resisted Harthouse's advances, but she has experienced a crisis and needs time to recover.
