Abstract: Abstract The Hong Kong Government has in recent years advocated a number of educational reforms in order to raise the standard of English in this competitive society. These reforms bring about resistance in schools and teachers are more pressured. On the other hand the English proficiency of graduates as public exam results show has not reached expectations, even though the reforms were supposed to enhance students' English through more authentic interaction and experience of another culture through language arts activities. It has been clearly stated in the syllabus for secondary and primary schools, which identifies three dimension targets of learning: knowledge, interpersonal and experience dimension; 'one of the Dimension Targets of the English Language curriculum is to develop learner's capacity to use English to respond and give expression to real and imaginative experience. In this regard, language arts has much to offer' (CDC 1999:103). The Curriculum Development Council (CDC) has used the term 'language arts' since 1983 to recommend 'approaches to the teaching of language arts/literature, which would make the teaching/learning process both meaningful and enjoyable'. It also refers to 'the use of imaginative texts in the language classroom and states that such texts may be selected from high or popular literature, both written and spoken, and include poems, novels, short stories, drama, films, film scripts, jokes, advertisements, popular songs lyrics, radio and television programmes, etc.'(CDC 1999:103). This thesis is an exploratory study aiming to explore the problems in promoting language arts in the Hong Kong primary school classroom, especially in mainstream teaching. Qualitative data from fifteen interviews with both local and Native-speaking English (NET) teachers are condensed and categorized into three areas: 1) teachers' attitudes and beliefs, 2) resources available for the teaching of language arts and 3) its implementation in the classroom. An analysis of the data shows that there is a difference in the understanding of language arts, the selection of materials and perception of a meaningful and enjoyable teaching/learning process, among the teachers themselves. After ii some discussion of the rationale behind these differences, a number of recommendations are made and the scope for further studies set out in the concluding chapter. iii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3671352 Subjects: Language arts - China - Hong Kong English language - Study and teaching (Elementary) - China - Hong Kong English teachers - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes Teachers, Foreign - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

This book focuses on Hong Kong as a multilingual society. It investigates how trilingual education is implemented in Hong Kong primary schools. Based on a large scale survey of 155 Hong Kong schools and in-depth case studies in 3 selected schools, the book gives an overview of trilingual education in Hong Kong primary schools, revealing the views on trilingual education of all stakeholders: school principals, panel chairs, subject teachers, students, and parents. The research findings presented in this book suggest that the implementation of trilingual education varies significantly from school to school, as does the effectiveness of the trilingual education models used. It shows how students’ views towards the use of different media of instruction (MoIs) also vary, and how their mother-tongue backgrounds affect their perceptions. By documenting views, policies and implementation methods, the book provides insight into the practice of trilingual education in Hong Kong and offers suggestions on potentially effective implementation methods.

Abstract: Abstract Language arts being regarded as valuable assets for creating beneficial language learning experience for students has not been fully implemented in the Hong Kong English teaching syllabus, especially in the public examination classes. Can students of Hong Kong really benefit from language arts? In this paper, I focus on the effects of language arts on the learning experience of a Secondary 4 Chinese-medium mixed ability class in Hong Kong with regard to their enjoyment, their language enrichment, their cultural enrichment and their personal involvement in a series of four lessons based on the same topic: one conventional lesson and three language arts lessons using different language arts genres. Students' responses of the lessons were collected through Lesson Feedback Questionnaires, Individual Interviews and Students' Works. Special attention was given to comparing the views of the high achievers and low achievers of the class on the use of language arts in their learning of a second language. From the findings, students generally enjoyed the language arts lessons more than the conventional lessons, but they found that it was more effective and efficient to learn the language through the traditional approach as they felt that they were provided with a lot of information like vocabulary and complex sentence structures in class. It is hoped that the results of this study could help to shape the role of language arts in the recent development of the 2007 Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examinations English syllabus and the 2009 senior secondary English curriculum. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3167652 Subjects: Language arts - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong English language - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong High school seniors - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

Abstract: Research has shown that language arts can provide a motivating and meaningful way for learners to interact and hence, help promote second language acquisition. Aiming to examine the feasibility of the incorporation of language arts into the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary (NSS) English Language Curriculum, this study sought voices from the main parties involved in the innovative change through investigating students' responses to language arts and teachers' efforts to shape the curriculum innovation. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from a local secondary school. Student questionnaires were administered to 129 senior secondary students (grades 11‐12) in this study. Focus group interviews with 14 students and semi‐structured individual interviews with 11 English language teachers were also conducted to explore senior secondary students' and teachers' views towards the use of language arts materials in their classrooms and to elicit their perceived advantages and constraints of integrating language arts into the NSS English Language curriculum at school. Although the students and teachers expressed positive views on language arts as a result of enjoying different learning activities and opportunities for collaborative learning, they displayed mixed feelings about its conduciveness for enhancing learners' English proficiency and preparing for the public examination - the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE). The study concludes that in initiating an innovative change in the Hong Kong school context, teachers encounter challenges, such as time constraints, syllabus coverage, their self‐efficacy and readiness that evolve mostly due to the paradigm shift from traditional to contemporary pedagogies. Pedagogical implications are discussed and suggestions are presented to overcome such constraints to enhance the workability of such innovations in the local secondary education setting. One theme appears constantly in these chapters: that in the English language classroom, whether at primary, secondary, or tertiary levels, high interest and positive motivation occur through active learning when literary texts, literary techniques and literariness are featured. In this book, full coverage is given to the use of poetry, prose and drama in language learning and teaching at all three levels of the education system. The tasks and activities described here have been shown to work with all bands of students. This book is ideally suited both for practising teachers and participants in teacher education programmes in Hong Kong and the rest of S.E. Asia. It will be particularly useful for primary and secondary teachers of English wishing to incorporate appropriate and relevant teaching activities so as to meet the goals of the new Target Oriented English Language Curriculum.

Abstract: Abstract The education system in Hong Kong has long been widely perceived as examination-oriented, and the teaching and learning of English in secondary schools, like that of many other examination subjects, has become more and more utilitarian. English examination practice books and tutorial classes now flood the market, and spending class time on literature, or language arts, is considered to be a luxury and unpractical by some pragmatic teachers and students. However, the teaching and learning of English involves a lot more than the acquisition of skills and grammar. In this paper, I begin by looking into the current trend of English teaching and learning from both global and local perspectives. I then examine the certificate level English curriculum in Hong Kong and see why teachers use literature and how literature can fit into the curriculum. Three cases of incorporating literature into the certificate level English classroom will be examined and illustrated with some sample activities. The ways the teachers used literature, and the types of literature they used are by no means exhaustive and suitable for every certificate level English classroom, but it is believed that the principles behind the use would be applicable to most other classes of this level as well. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b2965115 Subjects: Language arts (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong English literature - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong English language - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong English teachers - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes High school seniors - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes
