Ultrasound has revolutionized a physician's ability to make urgent and emergent diagnoses at the bedside, and has changed the management of many acute injuries and conditions. This is a practical, concise introduction to what is rapidly becoming an essential tool for all critical care physicians: bedside emergency ultrasound. The Manual covers the full spectrum of conditions diagnosed using ultrasound and gives practical guidance in how to use ultrasound for common invasive procedures. Major applications are introduced using focused diagnostic questions and reviewing the image-acquisition skills needed to answer them. Images of positive and negative findings are presented, and scanning tips for improving image quality. The second edition has been substantially revised and expanded, with new images, updated literature reviews, new applications and clinical algorithms. New chapters cover additional procedures, musculoskeletal and pediatric applications, and the use of ultrasound in resuscitation. This text is invaluable for emergency physicians at all levels.

This book addresses the wide range of issues that face the program leader – from how to choose a site and how to negotiate for equipment, to how to determine staffing requirements and how to anticipate and defuse possible turf issues with other programs and services in the hospital or healthcare facility. The early chapters of this book focus on the leadership of your program whether in your department or institution. The second section centers on education at all levels recognizing that smaller machines have made ultrasound available for medical students to advanced practitioners. The third section provides detailed logistics on equipment, maintenance, and safety. The fourth section focuses on a quality improvement program and includes a chapter on the workflow process. For those with limited budgets we also offer a section on practical operating and educational solutions. The fifth section offers insight into hospital level credentialing, quality assurance, national politics, and recent issues with accreditation. This is followed by reimbursement and coding. The last section covers topics in specialized communities. Chapters focus on ultrasound in global health, emergency medical services, pediatrics, critical care, community and office based practices. Multiple US working documents including checklists, graphs, spreadsheets, tables, and policy appendices are included.

In the past few decades, point of care ultrasound (POCUS) has become standard in most emergency rooms and trauma bays. The use of POCUS has been shown to reduce mortality and morbidity while improving triage in critically ill patients. POCUS has also seen an increased use in hospitals as well. Anesthesiologists are using POCUS for line placement, regional blocks and now for endotracheal tube placement. In the ICU, POCUS is being used for most invasive procedures and in the diagnostic work up of patients. In the operating room, surgeons are using ultrasound to guide them during surgical procedures. Nursing staff have also incorporated ultrasound into their physical assessment of patients. POCUS allows visualization of internal structures and identification of pathology in real time with no deleterious effects for the patient. Recently, numerous medical schools including Harvard have developed dedicated curriculum for training medical students solely in the use of POCUS for physical exams. While this revolutionary training has not become the norm, the early data suggests that medical students trained in POCUS are better clinicians than their conventional counterparts. Will POCUS replace the stethoscope in the doctors handbag? The early data says yes. Until recently, the cost and training required to use POCUS has inhibited its expansion into the field. The cost for handheld units has decreased significantly in recent years and smartphones allow everyone the ability to carry a computer at all times. While training remains a hurdle, advances in technology and the overwhelming benefit it provides seems to have overcome this issue. Over the next decade, the editor predicts POCUS will become ubiquitous in all hospital areas and will see exponential growth in the prehospital setting. Currently, ultrasound guidance is standard for line placement and is increasingly being used for other bedside procedures. Furthermore, early trauma, sepsis, stroke and cardiac interventions have shown dramatic reduction in mortality and morbidity for all patients. Ultrasound imaging in the field allows for early triage, better use of limited resources, and better patient outcomes. These results will be the driver for POCUS use in the prehospital setting. This book is a hands-on field manual on the basic techniques of POCUS and the technical details that are required to incorporate POCUS for established first responders. The book also reviews the anatomy and physiology of many emergency situations while highlighting the role of POCUS in the treatment of the emergent patients. The authors include world experts in POCUS and have extensive experience in the development and use of POCUS in the field. In many situations, the authors provide tidbits from years of experience that may assist first responders in their job. Finally, the authors highlight many of the new techniques and technologies that continue to evolve that will change how POCUS is used in the future. We strongly recommend this book for all first responders and any person who is involved in patients in the prehospital setting or the emergency room. It is an excellent primer for anyone interested in learning how to perform ultrasounds or wanting to improve the outcomes for their patients.

This book serves as a comprehensive guide for integrating point-of-care ultrasound into clinical care. It includes detailed chapters on the use of ultrasound in cardiology, dermatology, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics, as well as for the assessment of the abdomen, musculoskeletal system, eyes, and thorax. Over the last decade, the use of diagnostic, point-of-care ultrasound at the bedside has been widely adopted by healthcare professionals in the United States. This technology has spread into many new areas of clinical medicine and more non-radiologists are seeking training and an up-to-date resource on use of the ultrasound machine. This book provides guidance on how to best approach patients with particular problems, practical guidelines on how to operate the machine and choose probes, descriptions and illustrations that depict the patient’s position and structures that are scanned, and the anatomy and pathophysiology of each area. Practical Point-of-Care Medical Ultrasound is a valuable addition to the library of any resident, fellow, physician, or other healthcare provider who uses ultrasound in a clinical setting.

"Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) has become an essential tool within acute specialties to enhance bedside diagnostics, facilitate safe interventional procedures and guide referral to specialist services. It is vital for this tool to be expanded to community and prehospital settings where access to definitive investigations is limited. With the evolution of technology, ultrasound is becoming increasingly available due to reducing costs, machine size and remote image review for quality assurance purposes. This skill is invaluable for clinicians at all levels of training from medical school through to consultancy and allied healthcare professionals in any discipline"--
