Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ...From experiments made by testing the currents of air at such surface ventilators and in the sewers, I have found these to be in the same direction as t-he flow of sewage, especially where the sewers are only on a slight incline; but where the gradients are steep, the currents of air are generally in the opposite direction to the flow. In the town of Leeds, about the year 1867, in the neighbourhood of Heading1ey--a district at an altitude of about 200 ft. above the level of the main sewers of the town to which it was connected--diphtheria and throat disease were prevalent, which were attributed to emanations of sewer air passing up to this higher district; but at that time the system of disconnecting the house drains from main sewers was not instituted. There are other similar instances which have prevailed throughout the country. It therefore follows that where upcast shafts are introduced the flow of sewer air should be locked off at certain distances in the seweri.e., at every angle or manhole in its course--by means of aluminium valves made to form two sections, so that the lower section will admit of only the dry weather flow of sewage passing through it (which is the time when sewers most require to be ventilated), and the upper portion to admit of passing the augmented flow of sewage and water. The above matters refer particularly to main sewers, but t-here is the question of ventilating the house drains, which of course must be secured, although the main sewers, especially in undulating districts, may be made comparatively free from foul emanations. lt isproposed by some municipal engineers that the trap generally known as " Buchan's" trap, and also the intercepting chamber, should be retained to shut off the...
