"The Summa Theologica is the best-known work of Italian philosopher, scholar, and Dominican friar SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS (1225 1274), widely considered the Catholic Church s greatest theologian. Famously consulted (immediately after the Bible) on religious questions at the Council of Trent, Aquinas s masterpiece has been considered a summary of official Church philosophy ever since. Aquinas considers approximately 10,000 questions on Church doctrine covering the roles and nature of God, man, and Jesus, then lays out objections to Church teachings and systematically confronts each, using Biblical verses, theologians, and philosophers to bolster his arguments. In Volume II, Aquinas addresses: happiness good and evil love and hatred hope and despair anger virtue sin and grace and much more. This massive work of scholarship, spanning five volumes, addresses just about every possible query or argument that any believer or atheist could have, and remains essential, more than seven hundred years after it was written, for clergy, religious historians, and serious students of Catholic thought."

For no virtue goes against the inclination of nature, since there is in us a natural aptitude for virtue, as stated in Ethic. Ii. I. Excerpt from The "Summa Theologica" Of St. Thomas Aquinas, Vol. 2: Second Part Qq. Ci.-CXL On the contrary, Tully says (de Inv. Rhet. Ii.) that it is by piety that we do our duty towards our kindred and well wishers of our country and render them faithful service. I answer that, Man becomes a debtor to other men in various ways, according to their various excellence and the various benefits received from them. On both counts God holds first place, for He is supremely excellent, and is for us the first principle of being and government. In the second place, the principles of our being and government are our parents and our country, that have given us birth and nourishment. Consequently man is debtor chie y to his parents and his country, after God. Wherefore just as it belongs to religion to give worship to God, so does it belong to piety, in the second place, to give worship to one's parents and one's country. The worship due to our parents includes the worship given to all our kindred, since our kinsfolk are those who descend from the same parents, according to the Philosopher (ethic. The worship given to our country includes homage to all our fellow-citizens and to all the friends of our country. Therefore piety extends chie y to these. Reply Obj. I. The greater includes the lesser: wherefore the worship due to God includes the worship due to our parents as a particular. Hence it is written (malach. I. If I be a father, where is lily honour P Consequently the term piety extends also to the divine worship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
