Excerpt from The Scientific Papers of the Late Thomas Andrews Among the noted names which adorn the history of Britain during the last half century, one of the most brilliant groups is that of the Experimental Philosophers whose work lay, in great part, in the border-land between Chemistry and Physics. It is remarkable that each of the three kingdoms is represented in this group by at least one prominent member, England by Faraday and Joule, Scotland by Graham, Ireland by Andrews. The scattered papers of the three first-named have been collected and republished, so that they are now easily accessible. In the present work we have endeavoured to complete this series of reprints, so as to exhibit in a connected form the steps by which Andrews developed such grand subjects as Real of Combination, the Nature of Ozone, and the Continuity of the Liquid and Gaseous States. Andrews' published papers have, with one or two unimportant exceptions, been reprinted verbatim, and we have been able to obtain clichés of most of the wood-cuts. To ensure accuracy in the plates, of which the originals had long been destroyed, we have had them exactly reproduced by photo-lithography. Our task has been rendered comparatively easy by the zealous and efficient aid which we have throughout received from the daughters of Dr. Andrews.
