Excerpt from The Sanitary News, Vol. 7: A Weekly Journal of Sanitary Science; November 7, 1885-April 24, 1886 The plumbers of Philadelphia are all very busy, completing an active year's business; they feel confident that the business of the coming year will be fully as large as this year's busi ness. Sanitary-matters will receive more atten tion, not only from plumbers, but from builders, architects and investors in building enterprises. There is a disposition prevailing to study and read up on sanitary science. Plumbers admit that too little attention has been devoted to the scientific side of their work. As to next year's business, the best informed say that a large amount of work is in sight, and there is every confidence expressed in a good year. The fra ternal feeling is developing and binds the trade together. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Sanitary News, Vol. 1: Healthy Homes and Healthy Living, a Semi-Monthly Journal of Sanitary Science; November 1, 1882-April 15, 1883 Pullman, the latest and most promising suburb of Chicago, is a model town in a sanitary sense. It is worthy of attention in any of its numerous characteristics, but the fact that it was built to become the chief abiding-place of health and comfort is apt to be overlooked. The sewerage of the town is the result of design and not of accident or circumstances, and the curse which attends the disposal of sewage in most other towns and cities is not known there. It is' now demonstrated that the waste' of houses need not be even an offense. Pullman is located 14 miles south of Chicago, and although only two years old, it con tains a population of about About houses have been built, or are in process of construction. All the build ing are of brick and constructed in as substantial a manner as possible. The plan of sewerage was determined upon, and the laying of sewers begun in the fall of 1880, under the supervision of Benezette Williams, engineer of the water and sewerage works for Pullman. Mr. Williams gave a detailed account of this system and its workings before the Society of Civil Engineers in Chicago, recently, and the facts in this account are taken from his paper. Excerpt from The Sanitary News, Vol. 12: Healthy Homes and Healthy Living; An Illustrated Weekly Journal of Sanitary Science; May 5, 1888-Oct. 27, 1888 A fortress is no stronger than at its weakest point, therefore, the best job of plumbing with a little leak is hardly better than a botch. Dr. Hammond's theory of the lack of necessity for dying depends for a large portion of its support upon the believers in it living in healthy houses. While health authorities are perform ing prodigies of valor in their victorious fight against cholera and small pox, Whoop ing-cough and diphtheria are killing hun dreds daily. This number of the sanitary news inaugurates a new volume, the twelfth. Several new and attractive features are in contemplation and preparation, and will be launched as soon as ready. Presenting the only textbook available today that covers all of the critical elements of industrial hygiene ó conceptual information, computational coverage, case studies, and sample problems and exercises ó in one volume. Organized around the basic rubrics of industrial hygiene, this book helps students to think like industrial hygienists while offering the latest techniques for practicing professionals. Applications and Computational Elements of Industrial Hygiene is the most complete reference available on IH, and is also an ideal study aid for exam preparation. This is the first and only textbook that includes all critical computations for each concept covered. Each chapter discusses a different hazard and how to recognize, evaluate, and control it. The advantage of this approach is clear; technical issues, instrumental techniques, engineering control procedures ó relevant issues from A to Z ó are discussed for each hazard. Chapters conclude with case studies that offer critical insight into the practical aspects of the field. The book also covers emerging issues that will affect industrial hygienists in the future. The book includes real-life situations and experiences to demonstrate practical applications of concepts presented in the text. For students, Applications and Computational Elements of Industrial Hygiene offers critical material formerly scattered across multiple sources. For seasoned industrial hygienists, this is an essential problem-solving tool and state-of-the-art reference that consolidates and updates previously scattered information.
