The Revolution in Military Logistics (RML) and Focused Logistics requires us to view sustainment needs and requirements in a new perspective. Gone are the days when brute force and the sheer mass of materiel and numbers of soldiers can be counted on to overcome any mobilization, deployment, sustainment, or maintenance situation. Army logistics has changed and is changing through a series of established and emerging operational concepts that, for the most part, have been on divergent paths. This has been the prevailing theme until the recent introduction of Focused Logistics. Focused logistics has taken the tenets of Force XXI, Battlefield Distribution, Velocity Management, Army After Next, and the Revolution In Military Logistics and fused them to an overall organizational process. These capabilities coupled with redesigned organizational structures and doctrine should improve the overall management of systems and reduce the current stovepipe logistics system. The bottom line is that Focused Logistics provides the desired ideal endstate for sustaining the force as envisioned by the Chief of Staff of the Army (CSA). The author looks at this evolutionary process and discusses the major muscle movements that have guided the Army's path to the point where we are today.

A transformation in logistics is a prerequisite to the successful transformation of the U.S. Army. The current plan to transform logistics operations entails a reliance on information systems and automated technologies to provide "Focused Logistics" to the warfighter on the battlefield. To achieve this, the Combat Service Support community envisions a radical change in the business processes inherent to supporting the warfighter. Focused Logistics is not a new term. In fact, the ideas that make up the concept of Focused Logistics have been discussed and crafted for almost a decade. Along the way, the Army continues to develop solutions at all levels to provide the sustainment capability to the warfighter units of the Future Force. After a review of the ongoing modernization effort, the author will discuss the nature of Focused Logistics and what the Army is doing to achieve it. Just as logistics is both a combat multiplier and a war-stopper, ineffective logistics has the potential of being a showstopper for Army transformation. This paper identifies data connectivity as the enabler that has become the sine qua non of the Focused Logistics engine of the Future Army.

Designed as an operational template to guide the Armed Forces, Joint Vision 2010 has four major tenets: dominant maneuver, precision engagement, full dimensional protection, and focused logistics. A judicious application of technological innovation and information superiority is billed as the critical enablers of this process. Any initiative of this breadth is bound to be controversial. Critics have raised various points: that maneuver, strike, protection, and logistics are hardly new operational concepts and that technology is stressed over the human element. But our objectives remain fundamentally the same. What will change is how they will be achieved. Soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen fight and win wars, not technology. All the technological sophistication in the world is of little value without high quality and trained people. However, technology enables the warfighter to accomplish the mission with increased precision, lethality, and at a human, political, and economic cost we can afford. Technology goes a long way toward improving the quality of life of warfighters by accomplishing tasks more effectively and efficiently, thus allowing them to "work smarter not harder." Focused logistics, a full partner in JV 2010, takes a basic issue and seeks the best way to provide combat support to the warfighter. The most often quoted reasons for developing focused logistics are downsizing, changing threat environment, technology, and political and fiscal realities. Attracting little attention is the fact that logisticians in all services are dissatisfied with the level of support provided to warfighters. They know they can be more effective and efficient. They have the opportunity and high caliber people to make a genuinely evolutionary change in how they do business.

The field of transportation engineering integrates the building sciences with the creative problem-solving needed to create ground-breaking new infrastructure, systems, and solutions. Jobs in this diverse subject are accessible in both the commercial and governmental sectors. Experts in transportation engineering devise strategies, create blueprints, build, run, and repair networks. Their work encompasses a wide variety of tasks, from investigating potential new projects to maintaining current infrastructure. By doing so, we can be confident that individuals will update previous projects as needed and that new technology will be safely integrated into future ones. To predict journeys, determine whether new infrastructure is necessary, and suggest investment programs & transportation policies to reduce congestion and other problems in the future, transportation planners must first comprehend and analyze travel behaviour. Considerations such as projected congestion, population expansion, and proposed new settlements could inform transportation planners' assessments of a region's need for a new route. Transportation designs are necessary to direct the installation of certain facilities, after the development of new infrastructures. They include figuring out crucial characteristics of transportation infrastructures, such as their size, placement, geometry, and capacity, among other things. A new highway's transportation design, for instance, would specify the highway's precise location, size, traffic capacity, curvature, vertical alignment, and pavement thickness, among other characteristics. When building transportation infrastructure, transportation designs are essential.
