Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 38: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; July-December, 1858 Where the use of the knife or ligature is contra-indicated, as in tumours about the orbit, it is a very advantageous plan to inject with a strong solution of tannin. Make an aperture with a very fine knife, such as the smallest-sized iris knife, and using a small syringe with a very fine point, and a solution in the proportion of a drachm to an ounce of water, gradually distend the naevus; all force must be avoided, as it tends to produce extravasation. (mr. H. Walton, p. A case of subcutaneous naevus on the left cheek, and about the size of a shilling, is related, in which the injection of a solution of tannic acid was very successful. The strength of the solution was a drachm of the acid to one ounce of distilled water. The syringe used was made of platinum, and with a screw action. There is not the risk of sloughing to which the use of perchloride of iron is liable. (dr. F. Quinlan, p. Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 46: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; July-December 1862 In bloodletting you are wielding a dangerous, but in some cases a necessary weapon. When it should be employed and when not, is one of the most important questions in clinical medicine. We must judge of the necessity for this treatment by the balance between the heart and the arteries. If the apex of the heart strikes strong, while the pulse at the wrist is defective, act free] y and confidently. If, on the contrary, the ventricles are weak while the pulse is full, large, and rap ping, be cautious what you do, and if you draw blood at all, let it be by cupping the chest. Remember that the pathology of the disease is a temporary death of a portion of the lungs, and that the action of bloodletting is purely mechanical Position is of great importance. When the elasticity of the vessels is lowered by disease, the blood gravitates towards the lowest part of the viscus. Let the patient, therefore, lie on the side Opposite to that affected, that thus gravitation may tend to withdraw the congestion from the weaker point. If both lungs are affected posteriorly, the patient may lie on the face for a time. Never give purgatives in pneumonia. A patient with constipated bowels will do better than one with the Opposite state. (dr. T. K. Chambers, p.
