The way in which a banyan tree grows is unique. It begins with an original trunk and quickly develops an extensive canopy of covering foliage. Then it does an odd thing. Instead of relying solely on the trunk expanding and the tree growing taller, the banyan tree sends down aerial roots from the canopy. Most of these roots continue to extend until they reach the ground, where they expand, become sturdier and, develop into new independent trunks, linked to the original through the canopy. The process is repeated over and over, and as a result, the entire organism continues to become taller, but simultaneously covers more acreage as well.
