A Historical Fiction adventure novel, part of the series, The Caribbean Chronicles.
Roberto Cofresi, the son of an Italian immigrant, was born in Puerto Rico in 1791. He was raised in the vicinity of Cabo Rojo and as a child he was drawn to a life at sea. By the time he was fourteen, he'd joined privateers cruising the waters of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and in the following decades he became a pirate of wide renown, terrorizing ships of all nations. The American government found him to be a threat of such magnitude that they sent a squadron of naval vessels to the region to hunt him down. After more than twenty years of freebooting, Cofresi was finally captured, but not before he'd hidden a number of treasures on both sides of the Mona Channel. This is the story of "The Treasures of Roberto Cofresi."
Many have acclaimed to know where the treasure of the Pirate Cofresí hidden in Puerto Rico since 1824. Others claimed that it has already been disinterred and discovered and taken away almost 125 years ago with the help of some private U.S. investors and the help of descendants of members of his pirate ship crew. But there is only one real account...
The Legend of Roberto Cofresi dates back to the 1800s and started in the town of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Numerous myths and legendary stories have been written about him and his transformation from a life of merchant sailor to corsair. He was one of the bravest and most compassionate corsairs of his time. Cofresi is renowned as the Robin Hood of Puerto Rico because of his generosity towards the poor people of Puerto Rico during a time of famine. For this reason, the people of Puerto Rico pledged their loyalty to him and protected him from the authorities until his eventual capture in 1825."
Skilfully uses this notorious episode to illuminate the nature and extent of piracy in the period. The pirate attack on the British brig Morning Star, en route from Ceylon to London, near Ascension Island in 1828 was one of the most shocking episodes of piracy in the nineteenth century. Although the captain and many members of the crew were murdered by the pirates led by the notorious Benito de Soto, some survived, escaped and sailed the ship back to Britain. This book, based on extensive original research in Britain, Spain and Brazil, retells the story of the Morning Star, provides much new detail and corrects errors present in the many contemporary accounts of the attack. It sets the attack in the wider context of piracy in the period, and discusses many issues which the episode highlights: how pirates' careers began and developed; how they were pursued and tried, often with difficulty; what became of their treasure; how stories of the attack and of the survivors were sensationalised; how the women passengers on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.s on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.s on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.s on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.
