A quirky and inspired guide to your very own origin story. This enlightening and irresistible book for adults explains how you were made—not with the standard euphemisms told to us as children, but with vivid, exacting prose that unveils all the complex processes we never knew produced human life. With a brilliant talent for thoughtful, charming science writing, Katharina Vestre takes us from cell to human and shares surprising facts along the way—such as that sperm have a sense of smell and that hiccups were likely inherited from our ancient, underwater ancestors. She also shows why gender is more complicated than we think and reveals the questions scientists still ponder about how we came to be. A miniature drama of cosmic significance, this is the incredible story of you.

I was 20 years of age when the Lord saved me. My new life in Christ was filled with many blessings, deliverance, joy and hope. Yet, someone forgot to tell me that being saved was not all happy times. I learned quickly that being saved meant suffering, persecution, being attacked spiritually, having my faith challenged and a being hurt by fellow Christians in the church. After 20 years of "going through," whether by self-imposed circumstances or those that were imposed by others, God spoke to my heart about perseverance, longsuffering and endurance. He reminded me that He was yet in the midst of my suffering, disobedience and backslidden condition molding and shaping me into a useable vessel for kingdom building. He reminded me of who I am in Him, who He is in me and why I had to go through what I went through. The Making of You speaks to every Christian believer, new and mature, that has ever wondered, "Why me?" We are wonderfully and fearfully made in the image of God, yet it is through adversity that we learn to grow in grace unto spiritual maturity. This book will help you in your journey.

New York Times bestselling leadsinger of Slipknot and Stone Sour's hilarious trawl through the endless backwaters of human stupidity Corey Taylor has had it. Had it with the vagaries of human behavior and life in this postmodern digital blanked-out waiting room that passes for a world. Reality TV, awful music, terrible drivers, megamalls, airports, family reunions, bad fashion choices, other people's monstrous children, and badly-behaved "adult" human beings are warping life in the twenty-first century into an often-unbearable endurance test of one's patience, fortitude, and faith. You're Making Me Hate You is a blisteringly funny diatribe that skewers the worst aspects of human behavior with a knowing eye for every excruciating detail, told in the vivid way that only Corey Taylor can. Like his previous bestselling forays, You're Making Me Hate You is an unflinching glimpse into the mind of Corey Taylor, who spares no one from his seething gaze. Make no mistake: this is not the Corey Taylor you run into at meet-and-greets or in line at the coffee shop. This is not the kind and cuddly guy who kisses babies and takes pictures with your mom while leaving a voicemail for that distant cousin in college. This is not the loveable scamp who can poke just as much fun at himself as he does at the various rubes around him, though to be fair he does save one chapter for a brutal and lacerating self-analysis. This is Corey Motherfucking Taylor. This is the Great Big Mouth. This is that bastard you wonder about when you listen to Slipknot and Stone Sour. Funny, profane, blasphemous, and above all right on target, You're Making Me Hate You is pure Corey Taylor unleashed, exposing the underbelly of human depravity in all its ragged glory.

Mindful Intelligence is a focus on mindfulness, as it relates to creating and understanding the "self." Mindful Intelligence helps you evolve as a human being, by giving you the superpower of knowing what you're up to (and why) at all times. Believe it or not, this doesn't happen by default! In the Introduction, meet Delores, the cantankerous lady who gave the author a hard time in the 90's, and whose lack of self-awareness inspired this book. With 52 topics and illustrative cartoons, learn how everyone can benefit from Mindful Intelligence in everyday life. This book has a companion app that goes deeper into each of the 52 topics, one a week for a year. Mindful Intelligence and the Making of You has one main goal: to convince you (with both mindful intelligence and humour) that you could know much more about your own thoughts, feelings, and actions. Each moment people have choices they aren't aware of if they're running the "self" on automatic pilot, or with a stressed-out mind. Old habits like unconscious fears, defenses, and judgments can be as limiting as a prison if you're not aware of how they affect choices and quality of life moment-by- moment. Many people's minds have stress, fear, and negativity taking up space where joy and contentment could be. Enter Mindful Intelligence. Learn to work with thoughts and emotions -in the moment- during everyday actions and reactions. Mindful practice helps you build a strong sense of self by encouraging you to create thoughts, feelings, and actions from the inside-out (proactive), instead of the outside-in (reactive). It reminds you to keep an eye on the medium your life is being filtered through: YOU. Ultimately, Mindful Intelligence helps you fully appreciate life, while noticing how the self interacts with and creates that life. Mindful Intelligence is for everyone from beginners to seasoned practitioners, and is built on 25 years of mindful practice, and the idea of making the world a more mindful place, one person at a time.

Born in Blackness: Africa, Africans, and the Making of the Modern World, 1471 to the Second World War

Revealing the central yet intentionally obliterated role of Africa in the creation of modernity, Born in Blackness vitally reframes our understanding of world history. Traditional accounts of the making of the modern world afford a place of primacy to European history. Some credit the fifteenth-century Age of Discovery and the maritime connection it established between West and East; others the accidental unearthing of the “New World.” Still others point to the development of the scientific method, or the spread of Judeo-Christian beliefs; and so on, ad infinitum. The history of Africa, by contrast, has long been relegated to the remote outskirts of our global story. What if, instead, we put Africa and Africans at the very center of our thinking about the origins of modernity? In a sweeping narrative spanning more than six centuries, Howard W. French does just that, for Born in Blackness vitally reframes the story of medieval and emerging Africa, demonstrating how the economic ascendancy of Europe, the anchoring of democracy in the West, and the fulfillment of so-called Enlightenment ideals all grew out of Europe’s dehumanizing engagement with the “dark” continent. In fact, French reveals, the first impetus for the Age of Discovery was not—as we are so often told, even today—Europe’s yearning for ties with Asia, but rather its centuries-old desire to forge a trade in gold with legendarily rich Black societies sequestered away in the heart of West Africa. Creating a historical narrative that begins with the commencement of commercial relations between Portugal and Africa in the fifteenth century and ends with the onset of World War II, Born in Blackness interweaves precise historical detail with poignant, personal reportage. In so doing, it dramatically retrieves the lives of major African historical figures, from the unimaginably rich medieval emperors who traded with the Near East and beyond, to the Kongo sovereigns who heroically battled seventeenth-century European powers, to the ex-slaves who liberated Haitians from bondage and profoundly altered the course of American history. While French cogently demonstrates the centrality of Africa to the rise of the modern world, Born in Blackness becomes, at the same time, a far more significant narrative, one that reveals a long-concealed history of trivialization and, more often, elision in depictions of African history throughout the last five hundred years. As French shows, the achievements of sovereign African nations and their now-far-flung peoples have time and again been etiolated and deliberately erased from modern history. As the West ascended, their stories—siloed and piecemeal—were swept into secluded corners, thus setting the stage for the hagiographic “rise of the West” theories that have endured to this day. “Capacious and compelling” (Laurent Dubois), Born in Blackness is epic history on the grand scale. In the lofty tradition of bold, revisionist narratives, it reframes the story of gold and tobacco, sugar and cotton—and of the greatest “commodity” of them all, the twelve million people who were brought in chains from Africa to the “New World,” whose reclaimed lives shed a harsh light on our present world.
