Excerpt from The Law Magazine and Law Review, Vol. 21: Or, Quarterly Journal of Junispnudence The New York Commissioners have so fully and so ably considered the practicability and expediency of codification, that we cannot refrain from presenting their views in their own language. The question, they say, whether a Code is desirable, is simply a question between written and unwritten law that is to say, between law written by the lawgiver, and law not thus written; between law promulgated by that department of the Government which alone has the prerogative of making and promulgating the laws, and law not so promulgated. Excerpt from The Law Magazine, Vol. 21: Or Quarterly Review of Jurisprudence, for February, 1839; And May, 1839 It is a general opinion amongst our readers that we have already devoted more space to Mr. Warren's lucubrations than they are worth, and as his complete misconception of the nature and exigencies of the profession and the impracticability of his peculiar plan of study - the two radical all-pervading errors of his work - have been satisfactorily exposed, it certainly seems useless to proceed with a systematic review. Our more immediate object, therefore, is to introduce the enlightened American whose work is named at the head of this article, and then afford the rising generation the benefit of sundry promised hints and suggestions of our own. The work Mr. Hoffman's most closely resembles is M. Dupin's edition of Camus, in which the course to be adopted by the legal aspirant is marked out, the various rights and duties of the practising advocate are explained, and the leading books on the codes or systems of almost every country in the world, known to possess a code or system, are enumerated. But there is this material difference - M. Dupin makes no pretension to a critical acquaintance with an immense majority of the authors named by him, and gives the student little or no aid whatever in making a selection from the mass. Excerpt from The Law Magazine, or Quarterly Review of Jurisprudence, 1854, Vol. 21 The? Sentences and refined taste of Mr. Jeffrey admiran qualified him for that branch of the editorial art which consists in what he called vamping and patching, that is, the adaptation, through sagacious retrenchment or slight additions, of articles to the taste of the public, and the preservation of the sentiments of articular writers in unison with the eneral principles advocated in the view. Though he dearly loved a jo e, not a particle of malice tainted his nature. Even his severest eriti ues originated far more'in an active mind enjoyin the effects of its Pae -ish mischief than in any settled malignity. 0 can forget the kindliness of his nature, the fascinations of his society, that sprightliness of high intellect and warm heart which never dropped into vulgarity or even idle frivolity?
