Excerpt from The Journal of Biological Chemistry, 1911, Vol. 8 In spite of the large amount of work directed of recent years towards the solution of the problem of the mode of decomposition in the animal body of the aromatic amino-acids - tyrosine and phenyl alanine - we are still without a clear picture of the mechanism of the process which will completely harmonize with the ascertained facts. The object of the following paper is to record the results of some experiments having a bearing upon some of the possible transformations of the amino - acids in question. In considering the nature of the reactions which tyrosine and phenylalanine are likely to sustain in the animal body, much weight is naturally placed upon the phenomena presented by the condition of alcaptonuria in which, as is well known, the human organism loses its customary capacity of completely oxidizing phenylalanine and tyrosine, but instead converts them into homogentisic acid. Excerpt from The Journal of Biological Chemistry, 1920, Vol. 44 Practical experience has shown that corn-meal and skimmed milk form a combination which promotes the rapid growth of young animals as well as poultry. Laboratory experience has lately shown that the good results obtained with this mixture are due to the fact that the nutritive deficiences of the corn-meal are made good by the constituents of the milk. As the high cost of these food products makes it important to use them in the most efficient proportions, we undertook the experiments described in this paper. These were made with the following considerations in mind. The food intake of animals is chiefly determined by their calorific requirements. In agricultural practice com or corn-meal usually furnishes the major part of the calories of the ration. If skimmed milk is fed separately and before the corn-meal the animal may readily eat more than enough to supplement properly the com, if fed milk after the com it may eat too little. The proper way to feed these products, therefore, would be to mix them so that both may be eaten at the same time. Such a method would be particularly advantageous for those who have an irregular supply of skimmed milk because in this way all the latter would be used under conditions of maximum efficiency.
