Excerpt from The Japanese Beetle It is difficult to say definitely in What year the introduction cc curred. It is known that nursery stock with soil about the roots was imported prior to 1912 into the vicinity where the infestation was first discovered, and the indications are that a few larvae of the Japanese beetle were introduced about that time. Undoubtedly a very few larvae were sufficient for the establishment of the pest in this country. Since the insect was originally discovered it has spread steadily in all directions. This dispersion is the result not only of the natural tendency of the insect to move outward in search of food and suitable breeding places, as the density of infestation increases year by year, and to be carried by such natural agencies as winds and waterways, but also of transportation through the agency of men. The latter is brought about by the movement of farm products of various kinds from the heavily infested districts, by the passage of vehicles of all sorts, and by pedestrians along the roads through the more densely infested portions. In eastern North Carolina they begin to come out in mid May, in the vicinity of Philadelphia about June 15, and in New Eng land about July 1 or later. Excerpt from Traps for the Japanese Beetle Each trap should be emptied at least every other day to avoid decomposition of the insects. When jars are employed which have no outlet in the bottom, it is also necessary to empty them after a rain, as considerable water will collect in them. The jars Should also be washed occasionally because they soon become dirty from beetle excrement. Care must be taken to keep the trap and jar free from any Odor save that of the bait, otherwise the beetle catch will be greatly diminished. After beetles have been killed they should be disposed of as Soon as possible. Whenever it is possible, burying seems to be a most satisfactory means of disposal. Burning, even with the aid of oil or kerosene, does not entirely consume a considerable quantity of beetles, and the combustion is accompanied by a disagreeable Odor. If the beetles are to be disposed of with trash they should be. Placed in a closed container unless they are carried away within a few hours after they have been killed. Beetles killed with hot water have been fed to chickens with no apparent ill effects, but the J apan ese beetle laboratory has made no attempt to determine the value of dead beetles as food for poultry. The adults occur in the field during August and early September, when both males and females may be found frequenting the flowers of wild carrot. The first to appear are males, which emerge about the latter part of the first week in August (august 7, 1928, and August 5, Females do not occur in numbers until three or four days later.
