Excerpt from The History of Moses There was a woman that had a child when all the babies were to be drowned and she was a good woman and she asked God how she could save her baby and God told her to make a basket of rushes and put it in the water hiding it in the rushes. Then Pharaoh's daughter was going to bathe in a certain place and as she went past she saw the cradle and asked her servants to go and bring it out and they did it. When they brought it out they lifted the thing up that was on the top and. They saw a baby crying. Then they saw the child's sister that was standing far away and Pharaoh's daughter cried to her to come and when she came she told her to call a nurse for the baby and then she ran and brought the mother of it and she told the mother to take charge of it and to come to the palace and so she came. Then Moses when he was grown up was sent away to show some wonders to the Israelites and God told him the things he was to do. He first told him to lay down his rod and when he laid it down it became a serpent. Then he told him to go and do it when he was with the Israelites and he said he would do it. Then God told him to put his hand into his breast and he did so and his hand became a leper, then he pulled it out and he put it in again and when he pulled it out it was just the way it was before. Then God told him to do that and he went away home to the house that he lived in and God told him that he would have to go to the Israelites. Then he went away to the Israelites. One day Moses saw a Egyptian whipping a Israelite and he came and killed the Egyptian. It was not wrong of Moses to kill the Egyptian because he was doing harm to the Israelite for he was an Israelite too. After that God told Aaron and Moses to go up and try to make Pharaoh let the Israelites go away and then Aaron and Moses went up to speak to him and asked him if he would allow them to go and Pharaoh said no that he wouldn't. Then Aaron laid down the rod and behold it became a serpent. He took it by the tail and pulled it up and it turned into a rod. He put his hand into his breast and it became a leper and he put it in again and it was just as it was before. Then the Egyptians took all their rods and laid them down and they became ser pents. Pharaoh said he would let them go but he hard ened his heart and would not. When Pharaoh was going to bathe at a certain place Aaron stretched his rod over the water and it became blood. Then Pharaoh went home in despair and he said he would let them go but he hardened his heart again. Then Aaron stretched out his rod and frogs came forth and crept over all the beds and eat up all the food and everything and he said he would let them go but he hardened his heart again. Excerpt from The Second Book of Moses, Called Exodus When we pass from the literary structure of the historical books of the Old Testament to their spirit and contents, we find that these books in their present form are after all not objective histories, if indeed suchahistoryis anywhere possible. They aredominatedbyapurpose. Their aim is didactic as well as historical. Their compilers were prophetic men on whom God had put His spirit (numb. Xii. Who therefore saw the finger of God at every turn of the national history. History as written and compiled by such men has been happily described as pro phecy teaching by example.' Excerpt from The History of Israel to the Death of Moses ON being asked to write a Preface to this Translation of a portion of Professor Ewald's Geschichte des Volkes Israel, ' my first impulse was to reply that such a work needed none that the author is known to be one of the most intellectually powerful, as well as most learned and accurate of the Hebraists and Biblical scholars of the day; that his History of Israel, his largest, and perhaps his greatest work, is acknowledged by both friends and foes to be striking, original, and ingenious. Excerpt from Story of Moses Probably Aaron was not told that such a child was there. In his great Joy he would have proclaimed it to all whom he met. What this babe's name was we are not told, but he probably had one before he was named Moses. When he was three months old, and his parents' fears were great, they could not hide him much longer, for the dear baby was beginning to know his father and mother and sister, and to express joy when they came to him. It was more and more difficult to keep him quiet, and perhaps Amram had heard some hints that they were suspected, and again the question was asked, What shall we do with the baby There seemed to be no place in the land where they could hide him, except down among the bulrushes by the river. He would be so far off there. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Moses and Modern Science F we make our first approach to the Bible on the side of the Old Testament, we see much that looks to us, at first sight, unlike what we might expect to find in a volume given to us by divine inspiration. We meet, at the very out set, with an account of the creation of the world which seems to be essentially at variance with modern science, and of an apparently universal deluge which the philosophy of the present day de clares to have been impossible; we encounter a chronology which does not leave room for the peopling of the world with those multitudes of men which must have existed at certain given periods, or for the succession of national and of natural changes which archaeologists and geologists assert to have taken place since man first appeared on earth; we find a history which, according to our fallible judg. Excerpt from Moses, the Man of God: A Course of Lectures In this climate of ours there are some plants which need no culture. The thistle takes care of itself. It requires no husbandman to break up the ground and scatter the seed and drive away the fowls of heaven; but wherever there is a breeze it finds a carrier, and wherever it finds a sod it makes a home. Here are downs which have not felt the plough since the days of Alfred or Caractacus, and thistles grow on them still - the descendants of those prickly sires which were crimsoned by the blood of battling Danes or Britons in the far far distant times of old. But if you sow any kind of corn you must take a great deal of trouble. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
