The biography of Amasa Mason Lyman (1813-1877) is followed by the Lyman family history. Amasa Mason Lyman was a counselor to President Joseph Smith Jr., and became a member of the Quroum of Twelve after the Prophet's death. He was part of the first wagon train to reach Salt Lake valley in 1847, and in 1849 was called on a mission to California, where he helped establish a Mormon colony at San Bernardino. Later he was sent to preside over the European Mission, and while visiting in England, apparently he preached some false doctrine. He was dropped from the Quroum of Twelve in 1867, and excommunicated in 1870. He had returned to live at Fillmore, Utah, where he died. His former blessings were restored in 1901, after his death. Descendants and relatives lived in Utah, Illinois, California and elsewhere.
