After surviving a very traumatic birth, you would think that my rough days would be pretty much over, but that couldn't have been further from the truth. By the age of 15 I had dealt with the death of both of my paternal grandparents and my mother, just to name a couple of things. Those life events in themselves very nearly broke me, but over the years I have learned that nothing happens by accident, and is only meant to make you stronger for what is to come. Everyone and everything thing in life serves this purpose. I am living proof of that, I never knew that what I was facing at the time, would lead me to my future and give me experiences that I would need to refer back to years later.

Winner of the African American Literary Show Award for Best Non-Fiction In her first book, The Presidency in Black and White, journalist April Ryan examined race in America through her experience as a White House reporter. In this book, she shifts the conversation from the White House to every home in America. At Mama’s Knee looks at race and race relations through the lessons that mothers transmit to their children. As a single African American mother in Baltimore, Ryan has struggled with each gut wrenching, race related news story to find the words to convey the right lessons to her daughters. To better understand how mothers transfer to their children wisdom on race and race relations, she reached out to other mothers—prominent political leaders like Hillary Clinton and Valerie Jarrett, celebrities like Cindy Williams, and others like Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon Martin’s mother, whose lives have been impacted by prominent race related events. At a time when Americans still struggle to address racial division and prejudice, their stories remind us that attitudes change from one generation to the next and one child at a time. Features interviews with: Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin; John Lewis, congressman; Hillary Clinton, former First Lady, Secretary of State, Presidential candidate; Cindy Williams, actress known for role of Shirley on Laverne & Shirley; Cory Booker, United States senator; Christopher Darden, OJ Simpson prosecutor; Michael Cole, actor best known for role of Pete on The Mod Squad; Valerie Jarrett, presidential advisor; Kerry Kennedy, daughter of Robert and Ethel Kennedy; Iyanla Vansant, author, life coach and television personality; Harry Belafonte, singer, songwriter, actor, and social activist; President Barack Obama; andPresident Jimmy Carter.

During the 1950’s and 60’s, dark skin was an unacceptable stigma, especially in the South. Planting seeds and giving birth to ignorance among blacks; evolving into vicious racism against each other. My legacy is important to me. I want to leave a legacy that my children and grandchildren could be proud of. A legacy that would be a blueprint for future generations to tweak and make better. I write this book for future generations to learn, grow, and inspire to be a better you. This book is the story of my life and based on true events. It's about a young lady that struggled through her identity crisis and was raised in unstable environments and poverty. A story about a life of tragedy, trepidation, but triumph. I never accepted the ideology of a victim. Instead, I embraced strength, resilience, and a warrior's philosophy. I fit the perfect description of Tupac Shakur's meaning of the saying, "a rose that grew from the concrete." When the odds were stacked against me, I continued to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually. I believe that you are only a victim when you have no choice; otherwise, you are an enabler. I had no choice being born into poverty, but I had a choice on whether to rise above my circumstances. My desire was to break the mental and physical chains plagued in our communities and instill new ones for me and my children. My story goes out to all the people that suffered and survived, The Ghetto Blues. I hope to transform and inspire you to never give up on you.

During the time I was dealing with my mother and her reactions to Mike’s apparent abuse of me no one ever knew I had been victimized again, several times. The boyfriends at the time of my aunt Camille and Kim had been told of my abuse and apparently thought it was a good idea to try also. A part of me blamed my aunts for telling my secrets. I never spoke to anyone of these secrets out of fear of loosing more family. I know you’re probably reading this wondering why I didn’t tell anyone, well if you read the rest of this book I would think you could understand. I didn’t want to mess up anyone else’s home or happiness. I mean these were my aunts, the very people who were helping me through it all at the time. I didn’t think holding on to those secrets affected my life much but in the summer of 2010 I decided to release this burden. I told Camille of what her boyfriend had done to me crying through my entire confession. I begged her not to be mad at me and prayed this secret wouldn’t affect our relationship; after all we have become really close over the years. Camille couldn’t believe what I was saying although she wasn’t in denial, she had lots of questions and she began to cry also. She wanted to know if any of her other boyfriends had tried anything with me or to me and I told her no. Telling her the role her boyfriend played was like lifting a forty pound weight off my shoulders. Until this day I have not yet told Kim of what her boyfriend had done. He is actually responsible for taking my virginity. I figure it took me more that twenty years to tell Camille and although I will tell Kim, it’ll just take me more time to do so.
