The question of the order in which the different parts of rhetoric are to be studied must be considered by every teacher with respect to the needs of his pupils. The present arrangement will, it is believed, prove its adaptability to the needs of the great majority of classes; but the chapters of the book are distinct by themselves, each devoted to a separate topic, so that changes in their order may be readily made to suit special conditions. A course in composition is worth much that does not call for regular practice in writing by the student, and writing under the guidance and personal criticism of a competent teacher.
