Excerpt from The Religious Practices of the Diegueno Indians In culture, the Diegueno show a marked similarity to their neighbors, the Luiseno on the north, and the Cahuilla on the northeast. In basket-making these people use almost exclusively the coiled weave. The basket designs of the Diegueno are rather simpler than those of the Luiseno and Cahuilla, and run largely to the horizontal band type. Like their neighbors they manu facture fairly good pottery of a brittle, porous variety. In place of the large conical burden-basket usual in California, the Die gueno use a large burden-net with a packstrap to go across the forehead. Twines made of milkweed, mescal or maguey, and nettle fibres, are employed by them in the manufacture of a large variety of textile objects, such as bags, ceremonial dresses, and the carrying nets just mentioned. From maguey fibre they make excellent sandals, of a type not found in California outside of this southern region. The Diegueno, as well as the Luiseno and Cahuilla, build houses of tule or California bulrush, which are fairly weather-proof and permanent. Although big game is nat urally scarce in their habitat, they make a powerful bowof wil low, its length and size compensating for the lack of sinew rein forcement. Altogether, in the matter of material culture, the Diegueno seem fully equal to the other people of the State. Alone, among all the tribes of the State, they together with their neighbors the Luiseiio, Cahuilla, and Mohave, have achieved the manufacture of pottery and the use of cloth-like textiles. Excerpt from Indians of the Mesa Verde Almost seven centuries ago the people turned their backs on their proud city and walked away. All of the forces of na ture seemed to be against them. The rains failed to fall; the springs ceased to flow. No corn grew in the fields. At last, weak from lack of food and water, and bewildered by the fail ure of the gods to answer their hysterical prayers they sur rendered to the inevitable. Sadly they turned their backs on the once happy city and walked down the canyon, never to return. Cliff Palace, the crowning glory of the Mesa Verde, was a silent, deserted city. In Spite of the protection offered by the cave Cliff Palace has suffered from the leveling forces of time. The owls and pack rats have been careless -tenants and the lack of repair is evident. Some of the walls have cracked; a few have fallen. Foundations have slipped; roofs have disappeared. The once bright plaster is peeling from the walls. Excerpt from Moqui Pueblo Indians of Arizona and Pueblo Indians of New Mexico I have the honor to transmit herewith a bulletin upon the Moqui Pueblos of Arizona and the Pueblos of New Mexico for the Eleventh Census. A special interest attaches to these people, as they have had fixed habitations and have maintained themselves by agricultural industry from a remote period, in contradistinction to the tribes that live largely upon game and fish. Excerpt from Pueblo Indian Clans At Sandia and Picuris the existence of clans was persistently denied, but Mr Lummis assures me that there is no possible doubt that, at the former village at least, the clanship system prevails. Bandelier states that the Taos have 13 clans, six of which he mentions, but this investigator admits that his list is neither complete nor absolutely reliable. Excerpt from Andele, or the Mexican-Kiowa Captive: A Story of Real Life Among the Indians Andres was the youngest son, and perhaps, physic ally, the Weakest in the household, but of quick wit and acute mental perception. Living on the frontier, exposed to the frequent marauding, plundering expedi tions of the various tribes Of wild Indians wandering over the country, they grew up inured to dangers and equipped for emergencies. People by necessity be come quick witted and skilled in the midst Of the trying emergencies that come up in a frontier life. Many a latent power and sleeping faculty have been stirred to life and called into action in the face Of a great danger or extreme emergency, that, in luxury and ease, would have slept on forever undeveloped. Trials, con icts, emergencies, are necessary to arouse and develop the latent faculties Of our being, hence we should count it all joy when they come. Often had the Martinez family to guard themselves against the stealthy attacks Of the Wild Mescaleros and other marauding tribes, and at the time this history begins (i866), there were rumors that the Apaches were prowling about in the vicinity, but as such rumors had been constantly circulated during the past month, the community had grown careless and no watch kept up. Evil be the day when a man ceases to watch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
