Excerpt from The Cross in Tradition, History, and Art Owing to the death of the author, the Rev. William Wood Seymour, shortly after the completion of the first draft of the manuscript of his work, the text of this manuscript did not receive the advantage of the author's final revision. The author's friend and literary executor, the Rev. Thomas S. Drowne, had kindly consented to give his personal supervision to the book while it was passing through the hands of the printers, but in connection with his own long illness (an illness which resulted in his death some time before the book was in type) it did not prove practicable for him to give attention even to the completion of the proof-reading. This work has been done with as much care as was practicable in the case of a book of so special a character which had been left without the notes or the final instructions of either author or editor. It had seemed both to the literary executor and to the publishers that there would be no warrant for modifying in any way the authors conclusions or expressions of opinion. If the volume were to be brought before the public in accordance with the author's wish, it was thought essential that the author's own point of view and method of treatment should be adhered to without change. It was further decided by those interested in the undertaking that it was better to take the risk of issuing the volume with certain inadequacies or imperfections rather than to permit to be thrown away the labor to which the author had devoted years of his life.
