Excerpt from The Covenant of Peace This volume, which is published by special request, is addressed principally to Christian believers. It does not discuss disputed questions in theology, or issues be tween science and religion, nor is it an attempt to te state the truths Of the Gospel in the terms of modern science. It endeavors to deal, in a direct and practical fashion, with certain hard, painful, and puzzling phases of Christian experience, and with certain mischievous mistakes in popular Christian conceptions of duty and of privilege. It is for the tempted, the unsuccessful, the discouraged, and the weary: for souls fighting for life and Victory under the burden of infirmity and the sting of sorrow. The sermons are the outgrowth of a pastor's experience. They are printed substantially as they were delivered, without any attempt to eliminate their collo quialisms, or to convert them into finished specimens of. Excerpt from The Covenant of Peace: An Essay on the League of Nations Early in 1918 the English Review offered a prize of 100 for the best short study of the idea of a League of Nations. The jury, consisting of the Master of Baliol, Lord Parmoor, General Sir Ian Hamilton, Professor Bury, Mr. H. G. Wells and Mr. John Galsworthy, awarded the prize to the following essay, written by Mr. H. N. Brailsford. This competition of the English Review was more fortunate in its results than the majority of similar competitions. It actually succeeded in eliciting by far the best short account which has yet been published of what a League of Nations should be and why it is needed. Mr. H. N. Brailsford's success in winning this competition is not surprising. More than any other English or American political writer he has persistently and persuasively contended for an organized society of nations which would deprive war of any legal sanction. As a journalist and one of the editors of the London Nation he has long opposed the politics of the Balance of Power with the politics of a concert of nations. His book, The War of Steel and Gold, was the most drastic exposure, published previous to 1914, of the competitive imperialism which dictated the colonial policies of all the European Powers and of the reaction of this imperialism upon their domestic politics and upon their relations one to another in Europe. One would think that peace, a term that occurs as many as one hundred times in the New Testament, would enjoy a prominent place in theology and ethics textbooks. Yet it is surprisingly absent. Willard Swartley's Covenant of Peace remedies this deficiency, restoring to New Testament theology and ethics the peace that many works have missed. In this comprehensive yet accessible book Swartley explicates virtually all of the New Testament, relating peace -- and the associated emphases of love for enemies and reconciliation -- to core theological themes such as salvation, christology, and the reign of God. No other work in English makes such a contribution. Swartley concludes by considering specific practices that lead to peacemaking and their place in our contemporary world. Retrieving a historically neglected element in the Christian message, Covenant of Peace confronts readers anew with the compelling New Testament witness to peace.
