Humans display distinct unlimited capacity to produce expressions in language and use them flexibly in language processing. This characteristic of human language allows speakers to use novel, flexible, and complex structures during communication. Neurobiologically, however, it is not fully understood how the rapid process of language production and language comprehension occurs, including word generation, interpretations and common representations that facilitate the process of real-time language processing. The classical theories and approaches have limited the language network to perisylvian cortical regions, namely the Broca's and Wernicke's areas. This thesis proposes that the language network goes beyond the cortical regions indicated by traditional views. In doing so, this thesis puts forward a hypothesis that subcortical structures are not only fundamental to memory but also to language, in which online language processing receives a major contribution from the hippocampal declarative memory, which allows speakers and listeners to use language flexibly. The mechanism of such a contribution by the hippocampal declarative memory system during online language processing is via relational binding in which hippocampal declarative memory rapidly retrieves a network of relative, stored information to serve in the particular context. To support the hypothesis of hippocampal implications in language processing, several pathologies that affect the hippocampus have been reviewed, including Alzheimer's disease, Down syndrome, Williams' syndrome, schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder. The review evaluated hippocampal neurobiological alterations in each pathology, and determined cognitive and language profiles. Findings from previous pathologies indicate that the hippocampus affects language at two levels. First, in the general delay in language acquisition and other cognitive aspects, and second, in the disturbed use of language during online communication; short lag interaction is seen to occur when the hippocampal formation is lesioned. It appears that hippocampal lesions suppress the flexible use of stored information within certain contexts in communication, as it does in flexible navigation in animal models. This thesis concludes that the hippocampus is a multi-cognitive operator that is implicated in several cognitive areas including the flexible use of language during real-time processing, and therefore it should be taken into account in the language network in the human brain.

The statement, "The Right Hemisphere (RH) processes language"--while not exactly revolutionary--still provokes vigorous debate. Speech production and perception are two of the most complex actions humans perform. The processing of speech is studied across various fields and using a wide variety of research approaches. Yet, what is currently unclear is how speech researchers can combine methods such that a convergent approach adds to theory/model formulation, above and beyond the contribution of individual component methods? We expect that such combinations of approaches will significantly forward theoretical development in the field. The present research topic comprise a collection of manuscripts discussing the cognitive and neural organisation of speech processing, including speech production and perception at the level of individual speech sounds, syllables, words, and sentences. Our goal was to use findings from a variety of disciplines, perspectives, and approaches to gain a more complete picture of the organisation of speech processing. The contributions are grouped around the following five main themes: 1) Spoken language comprehension under difficult listening conditions; 2) Sub-lexical processing; 3) Sensorimotor processing of speech; 4) Speech production. The contributions used a variety of research approaches, including behavioural experiments, fMRI, EEG, MEG, and TMS. Twelve of the 14 contributions were on speech perception processing, and the remaining two examined speech production. This Research Topic thus displays a wide variety of topics and research methods and this comprehensive approach allows an integrative understanding of currently available evidence as well as the identification of concrete venues for future research.

Beyond its established role in declarative memory function, the hippocampus has been implicated in varied roles in sensory processing and cognition, particularly those requiring temporal or spatial context. Disentangling its known role in memory from other cognitive functions can be challenging, as memory is directly or indirectly involved in most conscious activities, including tasks that underlie most experimental investigations. Recent work from this lab has examined the directional influence from the hippocampus on cortical areas involved in task performance, including tasks requiring movements, sensory processing, or language judgments. The hippocampus shows preferential connectivity with relevant cortical areas, typically the region critically involved in task performance, raising the possibility that the hippocampus plays a role in cognitive control. Minimal criteria for a role in cognitive control are proposed, and hippocampal connectivity with sensorimotor cortex during a non-mnemonic motor task is shown to meet this standard. Future directions for exploration are discussed.
