The Beatles are known for cheeky punchlines, but understanding their humor goes beyond laughing at John Lennon's memorable “rattle your jewelry” dig at the Royal Variety Performance in 1963. From the beginning, the Beatles' music was full of wordplay and winks, guided by comedic influences ranging from rhythm and blues, British radio, and the Liverpool pub scene. Gifted with timing and deadpan wit, the band habitually relied on irony, sarcasm, and nonsense. Early jokes revealed an aptitude for improvisation and self-awareness, techniques honed throughout the 1960s and into solo careers. Experts in the art of play, including musical experimentation, the Beatles' shared sense of humor is a key ingredient to their appeal during the 1960s-and to their endurance. The Beatles and Humour offers innovative takes on the serious art of Beatle fun, an instrument of social, political, and economic critique. Chapters also situate the band alongside British and non-British predecessors and collaborators, such as Billy Preston and Yoko Ono, uncovering diverse components and unexpected effects of the Beatles' output.

Sound Bites: The Wit of The Beatlescelebrates the down-to-earth humor of these four happy-go-lucky, cheeky Liverpool lads. Although undoubtedly the most influential band of the 20th Century, John, Paul, George, and Ringo also proved they had a natural gift for comedy--especially when faced with the 1960s media circus. Featuring a host of pithy remarks as well as tales from their many film and music ventures, the book is illustrated throughout with nostalgic pictures of the band.

“The most trusted opinion in rock music” (Billy Corgan, The Smashing Pumpkins) Matt Pinfield offers the ultimate music fan’s memoir, an “entertaining and insightful” (Clive Davis) chronicle of the songs and artists that inspired his improbable career alongside some of the all-time greats, from The Beatles to KISS to U2 to The Killers. Matt Pinfield “makes rock ‘n’ roll fandom sound like a lifelong heroic quest—which it is” (Rob Sheffield). He’s the guy who knows every song, artist, and musical riff ever recorded, down to the most obscure band’s B-side single on its vinyl-only import EP. As a child, Pinfield made sense of the world through music. Later, as a teenager, Pinfield would approach his music idols after concerts and explain why he loved their songs. As an adult, rock music inspired his career, fueled his relationships, and, at times, became a life raft. In this “charming, rambling account of a life saved by rock ’n’ roll...Pinfield is a disarmingly likable guide” (Kirkus Reviews) through his lifelong music obsession—from the heavy metal that infused his teenage years, to his first encounters with legends like Lou Reed and the Ramones and how, through his MTV years, he played a major role in bringing nineties alt rock mainstream. Over his long career Pinfield has interviewed everyone from Paul McCartney to Nirvana to Jay-Z, earning the trust and admiration of artists and fans alike. Now, for the first time, he shares his five decades of stories from the front lines of rock ‘n’ roll, exploring how, with nothing more than passion and moxy, he became a sought-after reporter, unlikely celebrity, and the last word in popular music. Featuring a rousing collection of best-of lists, favorite tracks, and artist profiles, All These Things That I’ve Done “is an excellent read” (Publishers Weekly) about how a born outsider wound up in the inner circle.

This book discusses boundaries for organizational humour as well as the jokers and jesters that enliven modern workplaces. It has long been accepted that humour and tragedy can occupy the same space and that is eloquently demonstrated in this book. Using ethnographic research techniques, a selection of stories, ruminations, cartoons, and narratives of events is combined with theoretical conceptions of humour and fun to create a comprehensive analysis of the good, the bad, and the downright ugly in organizational humour.

This book is apparently for real. In the introduction it is mentioned that we will talk about all the ugliest songs, but... surprise! In the book there are only several lovely blank pages with the inscription: "Error 404: No song found. It was impossible to find any ugly songs. All the songs by the Beatles are amazing." With the exception of the last page... Such a fair amount of irony, to use this book as a gift or instead as a simple greeting card. Since the pages are almost completely empty, the booklet is also a nice notebook to write down notes.
