I needed to be careful, however, how I promised, or how I took any chances that might prove fatal, as the Chinese have a very uncomfortable way for pulling one's house down or making one pay roundly for any such disastrous treatment. A man was brought in one day with both bones of one leg badly broken and the skin and flesh mangled. I could do no more than make him comfortable with a little morphine, and he died during the night on my premises. But for a city magistrate who had had dealings with the foreigners before, it would have gone hard with us.
