Air transport in the Asia Pacific has undergone significant transformation in the last three decades. What was once a region in the shadow of larger and more prosperous continents such as North America and Europe is now at the forefront of expansion in commercial air-service networks, frequency and capacity, and the overall growth in the contribution of air transport to economies on regional and, in many cases, individual country levels. Despite this, it represents an area that is generally under-represented in the commercial air-transport academic literature. Air Transport in the Asia Pacific seeks to fill this gap. Against this context, the aim of the volume is to offer a contemporary snapshot of current academic research into commercial air transport in the Asia Pacific. According to 2019 updates for the 2009 Philippine Standard Industrial Classification (PSIC), PAL falls under Division 51. Air Transport where it includes the “transport of passengers or freight by air or via space. However, it excludes overhaul of aircraft or aircraft engines; support activities, such as the operation of airports; and activities that make use of aircraft, but not for the purpose of transportation, such as crop spraying, aerial advertising, and aerial photography. It also has a class code of 5110 and sub-classes, sub-class codes, and PSIC 1994 codes of: Domestic air passenger transport, 51101, I62101 part; International air passenger transport, 51102, I62102 part; and Non-scheduled air passenger transport, 51103, I62200 part, respectively. Additionally, the industry also has freight air transport (Class 5120) including: transport freight by air over regular routes and on regular schedules; non-scheduled transport of freight by air; launching of satellites and space vehicles; and space transport. The class also consists of renting air transport equipment with operators for the purpose of freight transportation. This book focuses on the factors that support the strengths of international airlines in general and the Asian airline carriers in particular. Defining the quality of human capital as the level of education and the competence of airline employees, it analyzes the efficiency of 39 airlines in various regions, both in terms of production and cost structures. Nevertheless, this innovative organisation continuously seeks new potential markets for its investment. However, not all countries are an attractive prospect for a new investment. This book presents an analysis on the attractiveness of the South African airline industry along with Air Asia’s current internal states and strategies in an attempt to rationalise the viability of an investment decision into the state. The data collected entails from secondary sources ranging from academic journal articles, organisational websites and reports, online newspapers, to various databases. The main findings includes a favourable yet challenging immediate and macroeconomic environment conditions in South Africa, supporting internal strengths that were aligned with most key success factors for the investment plan taking into account certain drawbacks identified, and a well-positioned business-level and corporate-level strategy to take on a new investment in the state. It is concluded that the South African airline industry is a viable market in which Air Asia is able to weather those obstacles and achieve great success. Nonetheless, Air Asia is recommended to play safe and currently penetrate the industry on a smaller scale before operating in a larger scale.
