Excerpt from Russian Festivals and Costumes for Pageant and Dance What the student shall find between these cov ers, he may accept as absolutely authentic. The costumes, the specimens Of needlework, of carv ing, weaving, and pottery, are all photographic reproductions of genuine and very valuable speci mens from various collections in Russia, both of. Museum and private ownership. One exception, however, is to be noted. The scarcity of available masculine costume will excuse the introduction of my own photograph in the characteristic festal garb of a Russian from the North and also a peasant from the South. Excerpt from The Costume of the Russian Empire, Illustrated by a Series of Seventy-Three Engravings: With Descriptions in English and French The Russian work contains a few more plates than are in this, but they are not in the least material, being merely duplicates of the same figures in different attitudes. Two only are omitted, which can be thought at all essentialz - 'those of an Armenian and his wife. And the Publisher was induced to do this for two reasons - first, the Armenian nation does not, in fact, belong to the Russian empire, and there are only a few of them that have migtated, and are settled in Russia. Secondly, because the country of Armenia is, in reality, within the Ottoman empire; and in his last work of this nature, namely, The Costume of Turkey, an Armenian has been. This beautifully illustrated book shows examples of Russian dress and accessories from the 15th to the early 20th century. Derived from the collection of the State Historical Museum and covering both dress worn in the countryside and in the city, this book is a fabulous feast of splendid patterns and fine detail. From exuberantly colorful and embellished dresses to elegantly sumptuous brocades and silks, the garments and accessories included in this book are an inspiration. In the first part of the book we look at traditional Russian dress, which was worn by all Russian peasants, by the urban petit bourgeoisie and by merchants. This type of clothing became accepted as national dress. In the towns and cities, dress was influenced by the Parisian styles but interpreted by Russian seamstresses reflecting the love of bright colors, multi-colored patterns and decorative features in evidence in traditional dress. With authoritative essays written by experts L. Yefimova and T. Aleshina, Russian Elegance is an invaluable resource for fashion designers, artists, fashion historians, set and costume designers, or anyone interested in these beautiful designs.

Defining Russian Graphic Arts explores the energy and innovation of Russian graphic arts during the period which began with the explosion of artistic creativity initiated by Serge Diaghilev at the end of the nineteenth century and which ended in the mid-1930s with Stalin's devastating control over the arts. This beautifully illustrated book represents the development of Russian graphic arts as a continuum during these forty years, and places Suprematism and Constructivism in the context of the other major, but lesser-known, manifestations of early twentieth-century Russian art. The book includes such diverse categories of graphic arts as lubki (popular prints), posters and book designs, journals, music sheets, and ephemera. It features not only standard types of printed media and related studies and maquettes, but also a number of watercolor and gouache costume and stage designs. About 100 works borrowed from the National Library of Russia and the Research Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia-many seen here for the first time outside of Russia-are featured in this book. Additional works have been drawn from the Zimmerli Art Museum, The New York Public Library, and from other public and private collections. Together they provide a rare opportunity to view and learn about a wide variety of artists, from the acclaimed to the lesser known. This book is a companion volume to an exhibition appearing at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University.
