Excerpt from Eighth Annual Report of the Board of Education: For the Year Ending December 31, 1861 The small frame house now in process of construe tion in the Scammon District, will afford temporary relief to that school, with better accommodations than those in the old building. Under existing circumstances, I know of no better means by which the present pressure can be relieved, than by erecting similar additional houses for the use of other schools. May it not then be desirable during the present year, to erect four or more small frame houses, each of sufficient capacity to accommodate about 250 pupils. Such houses are particularly needed in the Kinzie, Franklin, Washington and Foster Districts, and in District N o. 12. If neces sary, they could be placed on the same lots with the main buildings; though there would be manifest advantages in having some of them located in remote portions of the Districts. Even these additional buildings would afford only temporary and partial relief. Permit me to call the attention of the Board to the lack of furniture in the Halls 'of the new houses already erected. Most of these Halls are as yet nearly destitute of seats, and hence can only be made available by the pupils' standing during the lessons in singing, public reviews, and other general exercises that are brought into them.
