Excerpt from Ten Sermons on Faith In concummc 'rns mscouass, let me address the renewed and the unrenewed, in the language of inspiration. So then, they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the \llesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you the hodyis dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Excerpt from Faith and Knowledge: Sermons Written with a view to publication. To claim that there is complete uniformity of thought between the earliest and the latest, would be to confess that the writer had learned nothing between the ages_ of thirty and forty. There are a few sentences in the earlier sermons which he would now express somewhat differ ently; but he has thought it better not to alter any discourse from the form in which it was actually delivered. This principle has also compelled him to allow certain quotations to appear twice or even three times in the volume. He hopes, however, that sufficient variety of subject and treatment will be found in it to prevent these small repetitions from being tiresome. Excerpt from Ten Sermons Upon the Nature and the Effects of Faith: Preached in the Chapel of Trinity College, Dublin The volume which is now reprinted appeared first so long ago as the year 1833. The edition then published was very speedily sold; but I thought it better not to send out another at once. I was painfully aware of manifold deficiencies in the work, and I hoped that, by keeping it back for a little, 1 might be able to supply some of them; and so to make it - not materially less unworthy, indeed, of its great subject, but - somewhat better fitted for the important practical purpose for which it was written. It did not seem that the additions and improvements which I planned would delay the Second Edition long. And, no doubt, a little time ought to have enabled me to effect at least the most important of them. But the fact is, that when, not very many months ago, I resolved to republish the volume, they were not merely still unfinished, but, though materials for them to a considerable amount had been laid up from time to time, they could scarcely be said to have been begun. Excerpt from Sermons on Faith and Doctrine The readers of these Sermons will hardly think that his theism was vague. Metaphysically, they will find that he shrank neither from the assertion of the divine personality, though conscious of the limita tions attendant upon the transfer of that expression from man to God, nor from speaking of Christ as our Saviour, ' and as the expression of the divine nature in a human form; and that God and immortality were all in all to him. Morally, they will find that the image of Christ is dominant in the preacher's thoughts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Victory of Faith: Sermons and Addresses The sermon is the Stateliest and most noble form of human Speech. It deals with the deepest questions and most vital subjects that can engage the attention of man. The preacher who has a real message from God, and can deliver it in such a way as to command the attention of the public, is a blessing to any age. He is a prophet of God, and his utterances cannot fail to profoundly impress the public mind. When such a preacher has power to clothe his message in winning speech, and to breathe into it a passion which it has begotten in his own heart, his sermons have an added value and are entitled to a wider hearing than they can receive from the pulpit, no matter how large the audiences may be. The author of these sermons combines, in a remarkable degree, these essential elements of a great preacher: clear ness of thought, power of imagination and feeling, and the gift of vivid expression. He sees truth in its larger rela tions and has a clear grasp of the fundamental verities of religion. He sees too clearly the great and vital issues of Christianity to waste much time on doubtful disputations. The volume of sermons which is here offered to the public is scarcely less notable for the topics it discusses than for the vigor of style in which they are treated. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world" (Matt, xxviii. 18-20). "And he said unto them, Go ye into all (he world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned" (Mark xvi. 15, 16). "Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem, and ye are witnesses of these things" (Luke xxiv. 46-48). "Receive ye the Holy Spirit: whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them: and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained" (John xx. 22, 23). Inquire within.
