Excerpt from Syndicalism in France Revolutionary Syndicalism, however, has a broader con notation than the etymology of the term would suggest. A. Critical analysis of existing institutions, a socialist ideal, and a peculiar conception of revolutionary methods to be used for the realization of the ideal-are all contained in it. Revolutionary Syndicalism appears, therefore, as a phase of the general movement towards a reorganization of society on socialist principles.' Excerpt from What Syndicalism Means: An Examination of the Origin and Motives of the Movement With an Analysis of Its Proposals for the Control of Industry What are we to think of such a policy and such a programme? To those who are satisfied with the present state of Society, or who regard the existing organisation of industry as unalterable, any refutation of Syndicalism will seem super fluous. To such persons its spirit, its methods and its ideals will seem a monument of unreason, if not of wickedness. But we should err gravely if we assumed that'to the mass of the wage-earners in Great Britain, as in France, it presents itself in any such light. We ourselves regard Syndi calism as a very natural and, we must concede, very pardonable reaction from the intolerable social conditions of to-day, and from the quite in excusable neglect of Cabinets and Parliaments to deal with these evils. But whilst we think that the Syndicalist agitation supplies a useful corree tive, and brings into prominence working-class feelings that we are too prone to ignore, we regard the Syndicalist proposals, not only as ethically ob jectionable, but also as fundamentally impracti ables. Anarcho-syndicalism, a theory and practice of working class revolution, was developed not by scholars working in libraries but by the workers themselves. The anarcho-syndicalist movement of the 20th century extended to all the industrialized countries of the world and even agricultural regions. This was not a fringe phenomenon but involved millions of workers. Mainstream labor unions and social-democratic parties have become increasingly powerless to protect the gains of workers. In this situation, anarcho-syndicalism--the revolutionary, non-authoritarian alternative to reformism--is again on the agenda. This critical study of anarcho-syndicalism in the last century reveals a history of struggle which has often been neglected but holds many valuable lessons for the present.

This is the first comparative study of early twentieth-century French and British schools of political pluralism. A wide-ranging survey of the works of thinkers such as JN Figgis, GDH Cole, Harold Laski, Edouard Berth, Maxime Leroy and Léon Duguit, Pluralist Thought and the State in Britain and France, 1900-25 is a major contribution both to the study of national tradition of political thought and to the understanding of relationships between state, groups and individuals in democratic societies.
