My father loved power and expressed himself through domestic violence and bullying. I never thought I’d see that in the workplace too. As often happens with domestic abuse, I was vulnerable to being sexually abused, which happened between my fifth and eighth grades. Through good therapy, I found salvation in the two things I knew best: love and violence. I found football. I loved the teamwork, friendships, drills, the strategy. I was also good. Eventually, I was recruited by numerous Ivy League universities. I chose Brown. During senior year I was offered a coaching position of Brown’s freshmen linemen. I jumped at the chance. This led to a unique opportunity to coach with Don James, a mentor of coaches at the University of Washington or with reigning National Championship Coach and Sportsman of the Year, Joe Paterno, at Penn State. I preferred Coach James’s style, but my father bullied me into working for Paterno—and Jerry Sandusky—the two most vile and ruthless bullies in NCAA coaching history. In addition to Sandusky’s horrific and hidden pedophilia, Paterno’s and his staff’s bizarre behaviors, abuse of power, control dynamics, bullying, selfishness, narcissism, and deceptions forever soured me to college football coaching. I was motivated to earn an MBA with a focus on how good sports concepts, namely great leadership and teamwork, can affect organizations. From my experiences, bullying is epidemic. Victims may not realize they are being bullied, they may not know where to turn for help and advocacy, and they may not know how to stop this vile behavior. Successful Leaders Aren’t Bullies presents actual bullying cases I’ve experienced and addressed in the workplace with clients over the past twenty-six years. It empowers good leaders to choose leadership and to understand the benefits of leading with healthy behaviors and to intervene and to stop bullying. It will inspire and mobilize bullied victims to overcome and to thrive by presenting examples of resilient and healthy individuals and organizations.

The impossible people who make life’s journey so difficult are everywhere—at the office, in restaurants, on airplanes, living next door, members of your own family. They’re . . . • your “nothing is ever good enough” boss • the “no price is ever low enough” client • the next-door neighbor who redefines the meaning of paranoia • the maître d’ who looks through you as if you don’t exist • the father-in-law who you know is always thinking about how much better a life his Janey or Joey would have if only married to someone other than you Ron Shapiro and Mark Jankowski give you a simple and highly effective 4-point plan for dealing with all of them and more—N.I.C.E. Their system shows you how to neutralize your emotions so you don’t just react but act purposefully and wisely. It enables you to identify the type of bully, tyrant, or impossible person you’re facing—the situationally difficult (something has happened that turns an otherwise reasonable person into a temporary terror); the strategically difficult (she has empirical evidence that being difficult is a strategy that gets results); or simply difficult (being difficult is his 24/7 M.O.). Then you’ll learn how to shape the outcome by controlling the encounter and, finally, how to get “unstuck” by exploring your options. Using colorful stories from all walks of life— “He called me the scum of the earth and it went downhill from there,” “First, lock all your vendors in a small room,” and “The boss from hell”—the authors bring their lessons to life, from business life to family life.

Are you a leader who has been called abrasive, aggressive, or even a bully? This book is written for—rather than about—you. You have probably noticed that many, if not most authors and speakers who deal with this subject refer to leaders like you with demeaning names, because they think you need to be more respectful. Jordan Goldrich challenges this irony—or perhaps hypocrisy—by recognizing that, in reality, you possess a warrior spirit that is crucial to the success of organizations in our current VUCA environment (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity). Goldrich acknowledges that (just like himself) these leaders are imperfect human beings whose leadership or communication styles can sometimes create a negative impact. But he also acknowledges an important truth—that they bring unique value to the workplace and to society. His challenge to you, in this book, is to become a better leader by measuring yourself against the greatest warriors on the planet: the Navy SEALs, the Green Berets, and the rest of the special operations community—because you have something in common with them. Like you, these heroes have an uncommon desire to succeed, are committed to taking charge, and are focused on accomplishing the mission. In addition, they commit to humbly serve and to place the welfare and security of others before their own. Goldrich shows you how to do the same. Some of the author’s advice revolves around the clever use of the phrase, “The Least You Can Do.” If you are interested in doing the least you can do to be both authentic and protect yourself in a politically correct, over-protective world, you will find what you need in Workplace Warrior. If, on the other hand, you want to do the least you can do in the sense that it is the right thing to do, you will find resources to authentically take your leadership to a higher level. Human resources executives, executive coaches, and people who work with and for leaders labeled as abrasive or bullies will find a unique perspective on these leaders’ motivations and mindsets—and will then be able to do their part in building collaborative relationships with their colleagues.
