Wanderlust, unfettered freedom, and the eternal allure of the open road -- these are the themes that surface time and time again in Robert Louis Stevenson's charming 1896 book of verse, Songs of Travel. Fans of traditional poetry will adore this cycle of thematically interrelated poems that draw parallels between the perils and pleasures of travel and the vulnerability and abandon of romance.

Songs of Travel and other verses by Robert Louis Stevenson (Author), Paula Benitez (Editor) The following collection of verses, written at various times and places, principally after the author's final departure from England in 1887, was sent home by him for publication some months before his death. He had tried them in several different orders and under several different titles, as "Songs and Notes of Travel," "Posthumous Poems," etc., and in the end left their naming and arrangement to the present editor, with the suggestion that they should be added as Book III. to future editions of "Underwoods." This suggestion it is proposed to carry out; but in the meantime, for the benefit of those who possess "Underwoods" in its original form, it has been thought desirable to publish them separately in the present volume. They have already been included in the Edinburgh Edition of the author's works. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. His legacy is a vast work that includes travel chronicles, historical and adventure novels, as well as lyrics and essays. He is mainly known for being the author of some of the most classic adventure and fantasy stories in youth literature, such as Treasure Island, the adventure novel Kidnapped, the historical novel The Black Arrow and the popular horror novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, dedicated to the subject of split personality phenomena and which can be classified as a psychological horror novel. Several of his novels continue to be very famous and some of them have been taken to 20th century cinema several times, partly adapted for children. His essay work, brief but decisive in what refers to the structure of the modern novel of adventures, was also important.

Excerpt from Songs of the West and Other Poems Here's a murmuring in the trees, And a sighing on the breeze; There's a calling from the robins on the hill; And it fills my heart with pain And a longing - that is vain To be up and out, a-wandering at my will. There are wildflowers everywhere Shedding fragrance on the air, The butterflies are hurrying to and fro; The squirrels and the bees Are as busy as you please. Out there among the hills where I would go. F or it's there that one can rest. Lying close to Nature's breast. And the breeze's lullaby is low and sweet, 50 I turn my longing eyes Where the stately mountains rise. And the wooded hills are nestling at their feet.
