The processes of proton--proton scattering for various spin directions was investigated in the beam momentum range of 1 to 12 GeV/c. A striking energy dependence was observed at p/sub lab/ = 1 to 4 GeV/c, especially in .delta. sigma/sub L/, the total cross section difference in the longitudinal spin states. The rapid energy dependence has been interpreted as evidence for the formation of diproton resonances. Various pp scattering parameters were measured at 6 GeV/c, including 3-spin parameters, which are sufficient to determine pp elastic scattering amplitudes in a model independent way at 0.2

A measurement of the total nuclear cross section, [sigma]{sub t}, the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward nuclear elastic scattering amplitude, [rho], and the nuclear slope parameter, B, for {bar p}p elastic scattering at √{bar S} = 1.8 Te V, is presented. We find [sigma]{sub t} = 72.8 {plus minus} 3.1 mb, [rho] = 0.140 {plus minus} 0.69 and B = 16.99 {plus minus}.47 (GeV/c)−2. 5 refs., 13 figs., 2 tabs.

New data are presented for measurements of the spin correlation in pp reactions with longitudinally polarized beam and target. Data were obtained at 11.75 GeV/c for both elastic scattering and for .pi./sup +/- and .pi.−-production at high p/sub T/ in pp reactions at 11.75 GeV/c. A comparison is made with recent predictions of quark-parton models.

A specific set of spin dependent parameters for elastic scattering of polarized protons from an unpolarized deuterium target have been measured over the angular range of 15° and 65° in the Laboratory system. The experiment was performed at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) using a polarized proton beam of 0.5 and 0.8 GeV incident kinetic energy. A carbon analyzer was used to measure the scattered proton polarization. This comprises the first set of measurements in the intermediate energy range. Of particular interest, the analyzing power, (A/sub y/), has been measured for the pd elastic scattering reaction at both energies. A test of Time-Reversal Invariance (TRI) has been made for this reaction. This was accomplished by comparing the polarization (P) with the analyzing power A/sub y/ together with the depolarization parameter, (D), which was measured in this experiment. No evidence of time-reversal violation was found for this reaction in the region of non-zero spin flip probability. The measurements also furnished very useful and selective information on the p-d collision matrix, as well as the double-spin-flip nucleon-nucleon amplitudes.
