Radical alternatives to consent and trauma Contemporary discourse on sex and sexuality is fixated on consent as a means of mitigating danger and avoiding forms of sexual trauma. Sexuality Beyond Consent dares us to step into a different territory, where we do not guard the self but risk experience. Avgi Saketopoulou maintains that we are overly focused on healing trauma and need to reroute our attention to what subjects do with their trauma, in the process taking up a series of provocative questions: Why is sexuality beyond consent worth risking, and how does risk become a way of soliciting the future? Why might surrendering to the fact that your pain is not going away enable you to do things with pain? In what ways are race and racism shot through with the erotic? How can something proximal to violation become a site of flourishing? Central to the transformational possibilities of trauma is a queer form of consent, limit consent, that is not about maintaining control but risks sexuality beyond consent. Moving between clinical and cultural case studies, Saketopoulou takes up theatrical and cinematic works such as Slave Play and The Night Porter, to show us how the force of the erotic surges through the aesthetic domain. Grounding its arguments in the psychoanalytic theory of Jean Laplanche in conversation with queer of color critique, performance studies, and philosophy, Sexuality Beyond Consent proposes that enduring the rousing of the strange in ourselves, not in order to master trauma but to rub up against it, may open us up to encounters with opacity and unique forms of care.

An introduction to issues of sexual consent, covering key strands of feminist thought, how sexual consent is negotiated in practice, the influence of popular culture, and more. The #MeToo movement has focused public attention on the issue of sexual consent. People of all genders, from all walks of life, have stepped forward to tell their stories of sexual harassment and violation. In a predictable backlash, others have taken to mass media to inquire plaintively if "flirting" is now forbidden. This volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series offers a nuanced introduction to sexual consent by a writer who is both a scholar and an activist on this issue. It has become clear from discussions of the recent high-profile cases of Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, and others that there is no clear agreement over what constitutes consent or non-consent and how they are expressed and perceived in sexual situations. This book presents key strands of feminist thought on the subject of sexual consent from across academic and activist communities and covers the history of research on consent in such fields as psychology and feminist legal studies. It discusses how sexual consent is negotiated in practice, from "No means no" to "Yes means yes," and describes what factors might limit individual agency in such negotiations. It examines how popular culture, including pornography, romance fiction, and sex advice manuals, shapes our ideas of consent; explores the communities at the forefront of consent activism; and considers what meaningful social change in this area might look like. Going beyond the conventional cisgender, heterosexual norm, the book lists additional resources for those seeking to improve their practice of consent, survivors of sexual violence, and readers who want to understand contemporary debates on this issue in more depth.

Offers a radical theory of gender formation and its ongoing mutations Gender Without Identity challenges the argument widely embraced by rights activists and many members of the LGBTQ+ community that gender identity is innate and immutable. Avgi Saketopoulou and Ann Pellegrini chart another path towards the flourishing of queer and trans life. Positing that the idea of an innate core gender identity is simplistic, problematic, and, even, potentially harmful to LGBTQ+ people, they instead argue that gender is something all subjects acquire. Trauma, they provocatively propose, sometimes has a share in that acquisition. In their way of thinking, lived trauma as well as structural and intergenerationally transmitted traumatic debris may become a resource for transness and queerness. Such a suggestion importantly counters conservative accounts that identify trauma as disrupting or “warping” some putatively “normal” gender. Rooted in the work of French psychoanalyst Jean Laplanche, in queer and trans of color critique, and in the authors’ extensive clinical experience with queer and trans people, Gender Without Identity offers a radical theory of gender formation and its ongoing mutations.

This dissertation is about sexual pleasure and good, ethical sex. It is also about the ways women's pleasure is routinely marginalized in (cis)heterosex, and the gendered and heteronormative social norms and scripts that lead to such routine marginalization. Through the lens of pleasure, this dissertation highlights dimensions of sexual ethics, sexual agency, and sexual (in)justice that are often overlooked in philosophical conversations dominated by the concept of consent. Chapter 1 concerns the "pleasure gap": the fact that in (cis)heterosex women report experiencing significantly less pleasure than men report (and significantly less pleasure than women having queer or non (cis)heterosex). I examine how the pleasure gap has been socially misunderstood and miscast as a "women's problem" in ways which essentialize and pathologize women's sexuality. I argue that pleasure gap is a social-structural problem, a phenomena arising out of the fact that the practice of (cis)heterosex is structured by social norms and expectations that reliably and routinely lead to the marginalization of women's pleasure. Chapter 2 examines how social scripts for (cis)heterosex shape women's relationships to sexual pleasure. I suggest that the culturally dominant script for (cis)heterosex both constrains women's sexual agency, and plays a role in producing women as particular kinds of sexual agents and subjects who relate to pleasure in (cis)heterosex primarily as something to perform and provide rather than pursue or experience. As such, we must understand the script as productive as well as repressive with respect to women's sexuality in the context of (cis)heterosex. Chapter 3 pivots to focus on good, robustly ethical sex. I introduce the reciprocal self-regulation model of sexual agency to describe how sexual partners co-determine the nature and content of their shared sexual experiences. I introduce this model as a means of thinking about what is actually involved in good, ethical sex and in sexual "flow", and as an alternative to "ongoing enthusiastic" consent models which are increasingly and, I think, mistakenly cast as a new standard not only for permissible sex but also for sex that is robustly ethical and pleasurable

A 2015 survey of twenty-seven elite colleges found that twenty-three percent of respondents reported personal experiences of sexual misconduct on their campuses. That figure has not changed since the 1980s, when people first began collecting data on sexual violence. What has changed is the level of attention that the American public is paying to these statistics. Reports of sexual abuse repeatedly make headlines, and universities are scrambling to address the crisis. Their current strategy, Donna Freitas argues, is wholly inadequate. Universities must take a radically different approach to educating their campus communities about sexual assault and consent. Consent education is often a one-time affair, devised by overburdened student affairs officers. Universities seem more focused on insulating themselves from lawsuits and scandals than on bringing about real change. What is needed, Freitas shows, is an effort by the entire university community to deal with the deeper questions about sex, ethics, values, and how we treat one another, including facing up to the perils of hookup culture-and to do so in the university's most important space: the classroom. We need to offer more than a section in the student handbook about sexual assault, and expand our education around consent far beyond "Yes Means Yes." We need to transform our campuses into places where consent is genuinely valued. Freitas advocates for teaching not just how to consent, but why it's important to care about consent and to treat one's sexual partners with dignity and respect. Consent on Campus is a call to action for university administrators, faculty, parents, and students themselves, urging them to create cultures of consent on their campuses, and offering a blueprint for how to do it.

A provocative inquiry into how we teach our children about bodies, sex, relationships and equality--with revelatory, practical takeaways from the author's research and eye-opening observations from the world-famous Dutch approach Award-winning author Bonnie J. Rough never expected to write a book about sex, but life handed her a revelation too vital to ignore. As an American parent grappling with concerns about raising children in a society steeped in stereotypes and sexual shame, she couldn't quite picture how to teach the facts of life with a fearless, easygoing, positive attitude. Then a job change relocated her family to Amsterdam, where she soon witnessed the relaxed and egalitarian sexual attitudes of the Dutch. There, she discovered, children learn from babyhood that bodies are normal, the world's best sex ed begins in kindergarten, cooties are a foreign concept, puberty is no big surprise, and questions about sex are welcome at the dinner table. In Beyond Birds and Bees, Rough reveals how although normalizing human sexuality may sound risky, doing so actually prevents unintended consequences, leads to better health and success for our children, and lays the foundation for a future of gender equality. Exploring how the Dutch example translates to American life, Rough highlights a growing wave of ambitious American parents, educators, and influencers poised to transform sex ed--and our society--for the better, and shows how families everywhere can give a modern lift to the birds and bees. Down to earth and up to the minute with our profound new cultural conversations about gender, sex, power, autonomy, diversity, and consent, Rough's careful research and engaging storytelling illuminate a forward path for a groundbreaking generation of Americans who want clear examples and actionable steps for how to support children's sexual development--and overall wellbeing--from birth onward at home, in schools, and across our evolving culture.
