A series of homilies delivered by St. Augustine in the early 5th century on the first 36 psalms of the Bible. The homilies offer a deep and insightful interpretation of the psalms, drawing on Augustine's vast knowledge of theology and philosophy. This reference work on the Psalter was composed by St. Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430 AD) in the 5th century. St. Augustine was a well-regarded theologian and philosopher, and he served as a bishop in Roman North Africa. His writings greatly influenced the development of Western philosophy. Among his many famous works are, "The City of God," "On Christian Doctrine," and "Confessions." During his lifetime he dedicated himself to the considerable task of drawing up a commentary on the Psalms, the longest book of the Bible. This first volume covers psalms 1 - 20 and is illustrated with images of King David, and other Biblical figures mentioned in the commentary. The text itself is taken from, "A select library of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers of the Christian church / [First series] / Philip Schaff (1819 - 1893) Vol. 8, Saint Augustin: Expositions on the book of psalms / transl. with notes and indices; New York: The Christian literature company, 1888." This version of the work has preserved the original footnotes.

Fourth volume of the longawaited translation of one of Augustines classics and a great work in Christian literature. Newly translated by Maria Boulding, O.S.B., whose masterful translation of Augustines Confessions in the same series has been praised as being of a different level of excellence from practically anything else in the market (Bishop Rowan Williams, Monmouth, England). As the psalms are a microcosm of the Old Testament, so the Expositions of the Psalms can be seen as a microcosm of Augustinian thought. They recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustines personal life, his theological reflections, and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo.

In any commentary on a portion of the Old Testament by a writer unacquainted with Hebrew, exact criticism, and freedom from mistake, must not be expected. But the Psalms have been so in the mouth and in the heart of God's people in all languages, that it has been necessary often to find an explanation suitable to imperfect translations. And no doubt it is intended that we should use such explanations for the purpose of edification, when we are unable to be more accurate, though in proving doctrine it is necessary always to remember and allow for any want of acquaintance with the original, or uncertainty with respect to its actual meaning. However, the main scope and bearing of the text is rarely affected by such points as vary in different translations, and the analogy of the faith is sufficient to prevent a Catholic mind from adopting any error in consequence of a text seeming to bear a heterodox meaning. Perhaps the errors of translation in the existing versions may have led the Fathers to adopt rules of interpretation ranging too far from the simple and literal; but having such translations, they could hardly use them otherwise. Meanwhile St. Augustin will be found to excel in the intense apprehension of those great truths which pervade the whole of Sacred Writ, and in the vivid and powerful exposition of what bears upon them. It is hardly possible to read his practical and forcible applications of Holy Scripture, without feeling those truths by the faith of which we ought to live brought home to the heart in a wonderful manner. His was a mind that strove earnestly to solve the great problems of human life, and after exhausting the resources, and discovering the emptiness, of erroneous systems, found truth and rest at last in Catholic Christianity, in the religion of the Bible as expounded by St. Ambrose. This is volume one out of two, covering the Psalms I through LXXIII.

"As the psalms are a microcosm of the Old Testament, so the Expositions of the Psalms can be seen as a microcosm of Augustinian thought. In the Book of Psalms are to be found the history of the people of Israel, the theology and spirituality of the Old Covenant, and a treasury of human experience expressed in prayer and poetry. So too does the work of expounding the psalms recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustine's personal life, his theological reflections and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo."--Publisher's website.
