Excerpt from Roses and Thorns IT IS without any feelings of egotism or of self-impor tance that I offer these Simple lines to the public, but with the hope that they will be cherished by my friends, and also with the belief that they will find an echo in other hearts. I make no claim to the divine gift of poesy. My poems are unembellished and unadorned, and were written under many difficulties. The inheritance of defective vision has. Been a lifelong sorrow, and has made my work very arduous, and but for the aid of a kind sister, who has acted as my amanuensis, it would never have been accomplished. My affliction has also prevented much of the revision of these poems which would otherwise have been performed. I therefore, asking the indulgence of my friends, Offer them to the public as they are.
