"Rochester is a waterborne city. The beauty and potential power of the Genesee River's Upper and Lower Falls drew co-founders Nathaniel Rochester, William Fitzhugh and Charles Carroll to this Seneca-inhabited region in the early 1800s. The two falls spurred local industrial development, while the addition of the Erie Canal in 1825 connected the nascent village to cities across the country and expanded its market, making Rochester one of America's first boom towns.Established as a city in 1834, Rochester has since reinvented itself on a number of occasions, earning a series of reputations ranging from the "Flour City" to the "World Image Center."Mary Hasek Grenier and Emily C. Morry, PhD, both graduates of the University of Rochester, in collaboration with the Office of the City Historian, have compiled a unique visual documentation of Rochester's evolution. Rochester Through Time highlights the natural resources that shaped the city's founding, the historic figures who influenced its development and the resourceful residents who point toward the promise of its future."

Downtown Rochester is defined by Main Street, State Street, and the major crossroads of those streets. It is the core of one of New York State's most important cities. Rochester's Downtown recaptures the golden era when downtown bloomed as a mecca for daytime workers and shoppers and for an evening's entertainment at vibrant social centers. Rochester's Downtown celebrates the people of this great city as they progress from their early beginnings to create a dynamic business center. This excellent collection of images regenerates the excitement of riding the trolley, of watching a movie at the Palace or the Capitol, of window-shopping at the Duffy-Powers Store, and of tasting frosted malteds at Sibley's or warm doughnuts from the Mayflower Donut Shop or spoonfuls of roasted peanuts from Mr. Peanut Man. The narrative recalls Scrantom's as the place to buy books, Neisner's having the latest 78-rpm records, McCurdy's and Edward's with their special holiday displays, Eddie's Chop House for memorable dinners, and the Century Sweet Shop for after-theater sundaes.

Short Brothers was established in 1908, the first British aircraft manufacturer, with the company moving to Rochester during the early years of the First World War. At Rochester Shorts produced some of their most famous aircraft, beginning with a number of designs for the Royal Naval Air Service. During the inter-war years the company specialised in large flying boats, these undertaking pioneering flights while establishing a series of regular over water air routes operated by Imperial Airways. At Rochester the Company designed and manufactured the Stirling bomber and Sunderland flying boat. Short Brothers: the Rochester Years not only looks at the development of those aircraft, but is a fascinating account of the early years of long-distance aviation and the airmen that used the River Medway at Rochester as a launch pad for flights of hitherto undreamed of distances.
