Lesley Blanch’s novella-length introduction to the Memoirs of Harriette Wilson, the reigning courtesan of Regency London, was first published in 1955 in New York, where she was then living with her diplomat-novelist husband, Romain Gary. The Wilder Shores of Love, for which Blanch is chiefly remembered, had been published to acclaim the previous year. Harriette Wilson lived among and was an integral part of a wealthy society where privilege, arrogance and leisure flourished. The greatest courtesan of her age, her patrons included many of the distinguished men of her day, from the Duke of Wellington to Lord Byron. Her weapons of allure were beauty, style and wit. She held court in a box at the opera and competed with her courtesan sisters for status and prestige. “Harriette Wilson’s life was deplorable – but how readable!” Blanch exclaims. The motive for writing the Memoirs, published in 1825, was blackmail, or “a desperate effort to live by my wits,” as Wilson put it. She was in her thirties, her looks were fading away as were her admirers, and the annuity she had been promised by the Duke of Beaufort in exchange for leaving alone his heir, the Marquis of Worcester, had been cut off. Wilson offered to edit out of her Memoirs any lovers who paid 200 pounds, thereby holding the British aristocracy to ransom. Certain men who bought her silence were excluded, while others who paid highly were hugely flattered. Those who were brave enough to stand up to her were ridiculed and shamed − most famously the Duke of Wellington: “Publish and be damned!” he cried. She did and she was. Regency England Undressed: Harriette Wilson, the Greatest Courtesan of her Age also offers intimately detailed portraits of eccentrics, individualists and the demi-monde. Blanch’s Biographical Notes in the Appendix read like a raffish Who's Who of Regency England, and Europe too. She brings the distant past to life so it reads like a novel; precise in its curious detail and bold in its historical panache. MAUREEN CLEAVE, DAILY TELEGRAPH — “A scholarly romantic in a school of her own, the depth of Lesley Blanch’s research is such that other writers plunder her books shamelessly.” LESLEY BLANCH "Today, in America, the courtesan may be said to have been replaced by the psychoanalyst. In place of the alcove there is the analyst's office. But basically the functions of both courtesan and analyst have the same principle. Both offer escape, relaxation and individual attention; both are expensive. And the couch is still there."

England in the early 19th century: a place of extraordinary happenings. War on the continent and political upheavals at home buffeted the lives of ordinary people, while arts and literature flourished under the Prince Regent and a glittering group of aristocrats led high society. It was a period of tumultuous change. The twelve short stories in this book follow fictional Regency characters facing the challenges of everyday life while brushing up against momentous historical events. Young Miss Phoebe Churcham is unwittingly caught up in the assassination of the prime minister. The publication of a literary classic causes problems for Sir Aubrey Granthorpe. Imogen Rush, Dowager Marchioness of Lavington, visits with an old friend--the Regent's mistress. The tragic death of a princess touches the Newick family as it does the entire nation. And one day, foppish Postumus Enderby is inspired to take radical steps after reading the morning news. These stories and others will draw you into the private lives and wider world of Regency England. Charming costume illustrations by Shakoriel bring colour to these heroes and heroines, embellishing all twelve of Lesley-Anne McLeod's stories. The Regency Storybook is a collection of lives, loves, and histories--of a time two hundred years ago, but as vivid as yesterday.

Jack Coltrane grew up with his father's red-haired tomboy ward Meredith Fairfax chasing after him, always begging to tag along in his adventures during the years they resided at Coltrane House. Love for each other, and a combined love for Coltrane House, fast falling into disrepair by his neglectful father. But one day the estate would be his, and Jack and Merry would make it beautiful again, raise their children there, and live happily ever after. Theirs was the perfect dream, until Jack's father took him aside to tell him something that sent his son fleeing from Coltrane House, away from Merry, perhaps never to return. Ah, love... why is it never easy? Oh...and then there's Jack's quite singular friend from America, and possibly a pair of matchmaking ghosts. Ghosts? Well, certainly - why not? Pirates in the Regency? Of course! The Pirate Next Door Mayfair, London, 1810: Alexandra Alastair, a respectable young English widow, wonders if she dare add the Grayson Finley, Viscount Stoke, who’s moved in next door, to her list of potential husbands. She doesn’t know that Grayson has made a bargain with the devil (otherwise known as the pirate hunter James Ardmore) to ensure the safety of his daughter. He’ll do anything to keep young Maggie safe, but when Alexandra saves his life, with one look into her eyes, Grayson starts to drown. How can he keep both his daughter and now the beautiful Mrs. Alastair from the clutches of his enemy? And how can he prevent himself falling madly and deeply in love with her? The Pirate Hunter Diana Worthing is the wife of an English naval hero and daughter of a naval hero—she’s had quite enough of heroes, thank you. So when James Ardmore, Southern gentleman pirate hunter and thorn in the side of the British navy, abducts her from a tedious house party and spirits her off to his ship, she lets him know what she thinks of heroes. James knows Diana and her father’s private island called Haven holds the secret to the pirate he’s been hunting for years. He can’t bend the beautiful Lady Worthing to his will, though James is intrigued by this woman of unquenchable fire. He’s pleased to find himself stranded on Haven the following year, Diana Worthing now a widow, and the sparks between them just as hot. The Care and Feeding of Pirates Honoria Ardmore has a secret. Four years ago, the notorious pirate Christopher Raine, arrested for stealing a ship full of gold bound for Napoleon, makes one last request of Honoria. She grants it, and Christopher is taken out to be hanged . . . Or was he? Honoria couldn’t possibly have seen him come back to life in the rather thick air of Covent Garden, could she? Christopher is long dead and gone, Honoria’s secret with him, and now she’s betrothed to a respectable English gentleman. His sentence having been commuted at the last minute, Christopher spent the last four years working for his freedom as he crisscrossed the world. He’s lost everything, his ship, his crew, his very identity. Now he’s determined to retrieve it all—ship, friends, the treasure he was forced to abandon. Most of all Christopher wants Honoria Ardmore—and he’ll stop at nothing to get her back.
