The Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) is considered as storehouse of diverse group of medicinal plant species. Unsustainable in-situ harvesting practices coupled with climate change have posed a serious threat on a number of native and endemic medicinal plants including Angelica glauca and Heracleum candicans (Family-Apiaceae). Ex-situ cultivation of these Endangered species in suitable agro-climatic zones is recommended as conservation strategy. This book comprises of five chapters provides the first hand information on mass multiplication and production technology of these species. The results of experimental trials on seed biology, production of Quality planting materials through seeds and vegetative propagation, cultural practices, phenology, biomass, productivity and post cultivation evaluation of germplasm have been presented in detail. Applications of the results for developing an appropriate strategy for mass scale production and conservation of these species are suggested.

Acknowledgements: In 2005, I was sent in an official capacity to the Arava Institute of Environmental Studies in Kibbutz Ketura, Israel, to conduct research for a short period on how to conserve medicinal plants through cultivation. A project was funded by Dr. Sarah Sallon, Director, the Louis L. Borick Natural Medicine Research Center, Hadassah Medical Organization, Jerusalem, Israel. With the assistance of Dr. Elaine M. Solowey, who is a horticulturalist at the Institute, I drafted a list of endangered medicinal plants based on guidelines given by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, 2000 ) and TRAFFIC India (Trade Records Analysis of Flora and Fauna in Commerce, 2000), with supplementary criteria drawn from Tibetan medicine. I started writing and collecting data on the propagation and cultivation of each medicinal plant based on these guidelines and Dr. Solowey’s advice. Due to other pressing official projects, however, this work remained on hold for some years. From 2013, I began to work on the project in earnest and started to writing and collecting data on the propagation and cultivation of each of the selected medicinal plants. This book on endangered medicinal plant cultivation is supposed to be an experimental, trial field guide for the propagation of these species. It is intended for ethno-botanists, environmentalists, herbalists, horticulturists, and practitioners who are interested in creating medicinal plant gardens both in urban and rural areas. The guidelines are mainly based on traditional knowledge, my personal experience and observations and practical experiments performed in the field. The book, “Cultivation and Conservation of Endangered Medicinal Plants {Tibetan Medicinal Plants for Health}” is the first of its kind. A few errors must certainly have crept in, for which I am solely responsible. I would be most grateful to anyone who would be kind enough to point these out, for the improvement of future projects and editions. In the backdrop of remarkable strength and achievements of modern medical science, an overwhelmingly large proportion of world population still depends upon varying indigenous systems for meeting its health care needs. These systems, exemplified by Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha, rely on traditional knowledge of indigenous communities about health-imparting and curative properties of plants. Such plants of health promoting and curative value are currently collected from the wild in large amounts and face threat of loss of diversity and extinction. Because of this reason, and the imperative of improving them genetically for productivity and the desired trait quality, it becomes imperative that the needed demands for them are met from organised cultivation and not by extraction from natural stands. Meeting complex demands of the above mentioned kind will require collation and presentation of detailed information about the targeted plant species. The book is an attempt to meet this requirement for nine important plant species, viz., Panax Ginseng, Polygonatum spp., Picrorhiza kurroa, Dactylorhiza hatagirea, Crepedium acuminatum, Tribulus terrestris, Ephedra spp. Crataegus rhipidophylla and Ginkgo biloba. Each chapter provides information on different plants on aspects such as, reproductive biology, medicinal, chemical and pharmacological aspects, threats and conservation, cultivation, commercial status, future directions for research, value addition, patents and literature cited. The book will be of interest to a very wide and diverse audience, which includes academics and researchers, interest groups of drug industry, administrators and policy makers.
Medicinal plant cultivation has received an impetus in the recent years due to revival of interest in herbal medicines necessitating authoritative information on cultivation and utilization of this valuable flora.
