Global warming and climate change is the gravest concern of mankind in 21st century. Horticulture, in India with approximately 30% contribution in agricultural GDP from only 8% of cultivated land is threatened with serious consequences in production, quality and processing and increased cost of plant protection. The knowledge about the impact of climate change on horticultural crops is limited. Addressing problems of climate change is more challenging in horticulture crops compared to annual food crops. The issues of climate change and solution to the problems arising out of it requires thorough analysis, advance planning and improved management. Horticulture, in future scenarios of climate change offers numerous opportunities as well. These need to be harnessed by careful policy planning, innovation, technology development and refinement. This book, 'Challenges of Climate Change - Indian Horticulture' is a collection of scholarly articles on horticultural crops incorporating intense deliberations and discussions by eminent horticultural scientists in a 'Brain Storming Session' held at Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla, India. Each article reviews the current scientific knowledge, analyses the likely impacts of climate change on quality and production, suggests possible adaptation and mitigation measures along with future strategies of research and development. Additionally important websites for information, research institutes involved with climate change, important scientific journals on climate change, brief notes on important conferences on climate change and their significance and proceedings and recommendations of the Brain Storming Session is included in Annexure for further reading. The book will be highly and equally valuable to research workers, students, policy planners and farmers to manage climate change in near future.

Conservation agriculture is a sustainable production model that not only optimizes crop yields, but also reaps economic and environmental benefits as well. The adoption of successful conservation agriculture methods has resulted in energy savings, higher organic matter content and biotic activity in soil, increased crop-water availability and thus resilience to drought, improved recharge of aquifers, less erosion, and reduced impacts from the weather associated with climate change in general. Agricultural Impacts of Climate Change examines several important aspects of crop production, such as climate change, soil management, farm machinery, and different methods for sustainable conservation agriculture. It presents spatial distribution of a daily, monthly and annual precipitation concentration indices, Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy for analyzing the organic matter in soil, and adaptation strategies for climate-related plant disease scenarios. It also discusses solar energy-based greenhouse modeling, precision farming using remote sensing and GIS, and various types of machinery used for conservation agriculture. Features: Examines the effects of climate change on agriculture and the related strategies for mitigation through practical, real-world examples Explores innovative on-farm technology options to increase system efficiency resulting in improved water usage Presents examples of precision farming using climate-resilient technologies

This Trilogy explains “What is Horticulture?”. Volume two of Horticulture: Plants for People and Places analyses in depth the scientific, managerial and ecological concepts which underpin Environmental Horticulture. Chapters describe: Horticulture and the Environment, Woody Ornamentals, Herbs and Pharmaceuticals, Urban Greening, Rural Trees, Urban Trees, Turfgrass Science, Interior and External Landscaping, Biodiversity, Climate Change and Organic Production. Each is written by leading international experts. Sustainable use of resources and careful conservation are critically essential for the continuation of life on this Planet. Achieving this is where horticulture, natural flora and fauna and the environment interact in achieving sustainable development. Horticulture is the fundamental partner of ecological and environmental science and provides an understanding of eco-system services. Live plant networks are essential for rural and urban life. They are integral parts of natural communities, the context of historic and modern architecture and a means for rejuvenating cities and uniting communities. Plants provide urban, peri-urban and rural employment, business and tourism opportunities, leisure, rest and relaxation. These facets of Environmental Horticulture are clearly described in this book.

Climate change and increased climate variability in terms of rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and increasing extreme weather events, such as severe drought and devastating floods, pose a threat to the production of agricultural and horticultural crops—a threat this is expected to worsen. Climate change is already affecting—and is likely to increase—invasive species, pests, and disease vectors, all adversely affecting agri-horticultural crop productivity. Advances in agricultural knowledge, science, and technology will be required to develop improved crop traits, such as temperature, drought, pest, and salt tolerance. This two-volume set gives readers an understanding of the issues and makes suggestions for ways to mitigate adverse climate change effects on crops. The focus of Volume 1: The Principles and Applications in Horticultural Science is to identify impacts and suggest appropriate and effective adaptation and mitigation strategies. Volume 2: Impact, Adaptation, and Mitigation focuses on the impact of climate change on horticultural crops and offers ways to adapt practices to mitigate adverse effects. Together, the two volumes offer a diverse selection of chapters that address issues of importance to those in the horticulture industry, researchers, faculty, and others. The two-volume set: • Provides a recent understanding about climate change effects on horticulture • Covers unique information regarding important fruit crops, including flowers, spices, and plantation crops • Serves as an excellent source for researchers to formulate their adaptation and mitigation strategies • Covers abiotic and biotic stresses in relation to climate change • Presents environmentally safe and recent technological approaches such as nanotechnology and biodynamics • Includes case studies The books are an excellent resource for researchers; instructors; students in agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, and other allied subjects; and policymakers.

Climate change, a global phenomenon, has attracted scientists to contribute in anticipatory research to mitigate adverse impacts, which are more important for horticulture, considering that the scenario is in the midst of revolution, reaching the production level of 250 million tonnes in India. Impacts of climate variability have, invariably, profound influence on production and quality. An understanding of the impacts and relevant adaptation strategies are of foremost importance to sustain the productivity and profitability of horticulture crops in the climate change scenario, which necessitates synthesis of current knowledge to develop strategies for adaptation and mitigation to achieve climate-resilient horticulture. The book Climate-resilient horticulture: adaptation and mitigation strategies addresses the effects of climate change on different horticultural crops and focuses on the adaptation strategies based on the scientific knowledge generated by the experts in different agro-climatic regions in India. Issues have been covered in various chapters to make this book a treasure of knowledge in horticulture vis-a-vis climate change. Some of the crops included in the book are apple, grapes, cashew, banana, litchi, mango, coconut, oil palm, potato, tomato, cucurbits and flowers. In addition to strategies to be adapted in these crops, various other important aspects like carbon sequestration, pests and diseases, and urban landscaping are also covered in the book. Information on climatic risks and adaptation options for resilience in horticultural crops and future strategies and information on pest and disease dynamics on horticultural crops in relation to climate change and available mitigation strategies have also been documented. The book is edited by Dr H P Singh, a visionary leader, and his colleagues, which will be highly valuable to research workers, students, policy planners and farmers to understand and checkmate the adverse effect of climate change, so as to convert weakness into opportunity.

Climate change will impact horticultural production in the future. The present work assesses the future climatic impact on regional horticultural production by establishing a basic frame of a climate impact modeling chain. Using high resolved simulated climate time series of future alternatives of the worlds development, long-term trends of various climate effects were assessed. For this purpose, simulated climate time series were calibrated and effects of resolution, bias, bias correction, scenario, climate model and impact model as well uncertainty propagation along the simulation chain were investigated. A multidimensional bias correction method was developed in order to optimize climate time series consistency.
