Excerpt from Practical Work in Geography, for the Use of Teachers and Advanced Pupils In preparing this little work, I have tried to make it a guide for young teachers. The field of geographical study is so vast that it requires considerable thought to determine wisely what should be taught and what omitted. This book contains what seems to me a reasonable amount of the proper kind of work for each of the three departments - Preparatory (or Primary), Elementary and Advanced; and gives some sug gestion5in regard to the method of doing it. Excerpt from A Practical System of Modern Geography: Or a View of the Present State of the World This I am confident will be found not only the natural, but the philosophical method of teaching Geography; for on all subjects the learner must make himself master of simple things, before he can understand those which are complex. In the present instance, the pupil begins with confidence and alacrity, because he not only knows something about his own town, but the subject itself is highly interesting to him. From these simple descriptions, the pupil is gradually led on, by a series of the plainest and most important questions, to a knowledge of the grand divisions of the globe. When he has become familiar with these divisions, and can without hesitation point them out on the map, he is qualified to commence the Second part. In this part, after a few general observations on the divisions, he is required to learn on the map, the boundaries, names of rivers, towns, &c., and then he commences with a description of the several countries which it contains. In every department of description, great care has been taken to select what is most important for the pupil to know, and to commit to memory, and to reject whatever is of little use; for experience has taught me that long descriptions, however judiciously arranged, do not fail to tire and discourage the young pupil. Some of the more prominent features of the country are therefore all that should be required of the beginner. This work will be found to possess some peculiarities. The use of initial letters, in particular, I consider of much consequence in enabling the pupil to determine the correct answers; so that it is believed in going through the entire work, he will seldom require any assistance from his teacher. The Third part treats of Latitude and Longitude; and perhaps no part of the work is of more importance than this, and particularly as most books of this kind are deficient in this respect. The Fourth part contains an introduction to Astronomy and Physical Geography, together with problems on the Globes, and a Table of Latitude and Longitude of all the principal places on the earth. The numerous tables which the work contains, it is hoped will be found useful and correct. Some of them have been copied with little variation from Morse and Malte Brun, and others have been arranged with much care and considerable labor, expressly for the work. In giving this little volume to the public, I cannot but entertain the hope that I shall contribute in some degree to our improved method of teaching a science so necessary and popular as that of Geography. But how far I shall have the satisfaction of seeing this hope realized, the public must determine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography To all students of geography it is a lamentable fact that there is even yet a lack of respect for this branch of science. Though we have a new geography rich and vital in its possibilities to contribute to twentieth century education, yet all too many teachers are oblivious of the significance and value of the subject and, in the schoolroom, are rattling the dry bones of formal statement and definition. Their view of the subject, and their method of teaching it, restricts its value and curtails the interest which it ought to enlist from pupils. The object of this volume is, first of all, to present and instill in the minds of teachers the true nature of modern geography. Therefore Part I is devoted to the Nature and Scope of Geography. It is hoped that its careful study will result in establishing a correct and broad view of a subject whose content is rich in edu cative possibilities. Excerpt from Geography by Discovery: A Practical Geography The principal object of this small volume is to place in the hands of pupils some original sources of world geography, and thereby to interest, to instruct, and to train. The extracts have been chosen from English texts, some of which are already in school libraries. The suggested method of study is not mere theory, but has been put to the test by the author with children in elementary schools from Standard IV. To Standard VII. The results obtained appear to justify the present publication. Some of the exercises at the end of the book are sufficiently difficult for pupils in the upper forms of secondary schools. The extracts in Chapter II. Are taken from The Travels of Marco Polo (everyman's Library, Messrs. J. M. Dent and Sons), in Chapters III. And V. From the Discovery of America, and in Chapter IV. From The Earliest Voyages Round the World (cam bridge Travel Books, Cambridge University Press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography: Suggestions Regarding Principles and Methods for the Use of Teachers For some years past there has been a growing recog nition of the extremely unsatisfactory position of Geography in the general educational system of this country. Various suggestions and efforts have been made to place the subject on a better footing. But reform in such matters is necessarily Slow. Inveterate habits of use and wont are apt to blind us to the need for change, and any attempt to alter the existing sys tem touches many different kinds of vested interests. Even those who sympathise with the proposals for reform raise their hands in despair, and ask where, amid the crowd of subjects now demanded, room is to be found for any new topic, or for any expansion of an old one. I fully recognise the gravity of these difficulties, and am by no means sanguine that they are all likely soon to be cleared away. Excerpt from Naylor's System of Teaching Geography: Adapted to Pelton's Outline Maps The pupil who satisfies himself with merely learning to chant the names, and neglects to study the answers to the questions, will fail to acquire that practical knowledge of the science, which the system is calculated to impart. And the teacher who fails to instruct his pupils in this particular does injustice to the system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Realistic Teaching of Geography: Its Principles in and Examples of Simple Demonstrative and Dramatic Methods Errors and Examples of Simple Demonstrative and Dramatic Methods Few subjects are less skilfully taught in our Schools than Geography; nay, as a whole, along with History, it would not be far wrong to say that it is the worst taught of common subjects. It is usually traversed with the greatest care and even hard work, but it is made, in general, a painful process of mere memory grind, with the minimum of intelligence. AS remarked by Fitch,1 it is often most ostentatiously offered to the examiner when the teaching is weakest in intellectual training, and it is a favourite subject with mechanical teachers. It is generally deemed easy to teach, like its abused companion, History. In reality, it is not easy - nay, it is difficult to do really well; the elements of misconception by the pupils are SO numerous and so great, and the temptations to the misuse of memory are so strong Rightly taught, there is no more valuable, informing, or fascinating study nor any one more pleasantly and highly intellectual.
