Fracture Mechanics provides the rationale by which thick-walled pressure vessel designs may be assessed for adequacy of material toughness, for length of fatigue life, for necessary frequency of inspection and for fatigue life remaining after the detection of a given size crack. Examples of the fatigue performance and fracture characteristics of thick-walled cylinders of high-strength steels are illustrated and interpreted with pertinent fracture mechanics calculations. These provide insight for the designer into the various aspects of metallurgical control of strength and toughness, optimization of stress state through the use of residual stresses and importance of monitoring fatigue crack propagation.
